  7. Indian economy is booming economy in world. We are one of fastest growing economy, World Bank had put our GDP growth at higher than many other countries. India has seen a IT sector expansion like a balloon, it is expanding at fast pace due to various reason but we are lagging in other sectors like Manufacturing, Agriculture etc.
To promote indigenous Manufacturing of products our current government has come up with MAKE in INDIA scheme. Its aim is to manufacture in India and sell it in our country and export as well.
    Make in India scheme Benefits
In all most all industries we are dependent on imports from other countries like US, china etc. So if we start manufacturing in our India, it will reduce our imports, our GDP will further grow and we don’t have worry about international price fluctuations. Manufacturing in India will reduce prices of many products because import and transport cost will be less.
Our Government is trying to moot Make in India idea in every sector like in Defence where we are totally dependent on foreign player, we are trying to build many products in India. If we are getting in agreement with any company to purchase , we are also targeting the technology behind it , so that we can manufacture products in future.
Yes, definitely low manufacturing cost will lead Make in India program. At present china is Manufacturing Hub , because they are manufacturing all products in bulk and selling it cheap.
So India should also start manufacturing in Bulk, this will have huge money Investments, it will create many employments for youth.
To add up to Make in India scheme – Indian government has started new schemes like Digital Campaign, smart cities campaign etc. Digital Campaign will help people to connect with other people , use of information available on web, start their own businesses. This is also one of ambitious scheme of current government. People gets new Idea ,they flourish it on Internet, they will find investors and start. It will really reap benefits in near future.
Smart cities also a flagship program of government, to make cities world and attract investment is impeccable thinking behind this thought.
In coming years India will be youngest population in world, India need to leverage this opportunity and create a atmosphere for youth to stay in India and not just seek employment but also create jobs for others.
To fulfill all the promises our government need to push for better Infrastructure and try to have some policies in favor of Industries, companies. Government need to back companies, save companies from Investors and getting bankrupt. recent case of StayZilla, which is on the verge of shutting down, There are so many cases where companies don’t get government support and fall.
Government need to plan to have growth for all parts of India, currently few states are getting advantage of globalization and some states are still lagging behind. SO government can have plan for such states where we can have manufacturing hubs, and state people outflow flux will also stop.
We need to implement many industry friendly policies, need to cut down on taxes, need to Infrastructure and more importantly support from Indian people and government also.

Road to development passes through industrial development of the nation. West used this approach to achieve their current level of Economic and Human development.

India in the recent time has also adopted Make in India scheme to tread the same path. Significance of the manufacturing to present day india and challenges faced by the sector has lead to enormous pressure on the success of the Make in India. There is, thus, a need to improve the competitiveness of the manufacturing in India to bring it at par with best in the world. The urgency of the solution is upheld by the fact that china is relinquishing its low cost manufacturing status and the spot is up for grabs.

    Historical perspective:
Make in India, in general, is nothing new to the nation. We made world’s best textile products, gems etc. Although, the status was lost during colonial times but Independent India from under Mr Nehru to Mr Manmohan Singh aimed to earn it back. Mr. Nehru under state lead approach and Mr. Manmohan under market led approach tried hard to improve our Manufacturing GDP.

    Current overview of the status:
Despite the liberalisation efforts of Manmohanji, our Manufacturing to GDP ratio stood at about 16%. Manufacturing in India faces multitued of problems each imposing a cost – Monetary , Effort, Time. These costs need to minimised, if not eliminated to ensure our industry competes with the best in world. Rising competition from Vietnam, Bangladesh and China imposes urgency to its solution.

    Significance of Manufacturing:
One may ask, why do we need to improve the sector and reduce such costs ? Answer lies in its significance to the nation. The sector has the potential to provide employment to the youth bulge seen in our demography. It would help in improving quality of life, eliminate poverty and improve our per capita GDP. Government will benefit from improved revenues ie direct taxes from individuals and corporation and indirect taxes from consumption , needed to fund the welfare activities and check its fiscal deficit.

New focus: Make in India scheme –
Realisation of the significance of the sector lead to governemnt coming up with Make in INdia scheme to improve local manufacturing and increase our exports. The political will is worth commending behind the scheme.

However, the success of the scheme hinges on solution to the problems faced by the industry to become competitive. These challenges lie in financing, availability of raw material , energy costs, taxation and logistic issue etc.

Major problem faced by each industry is to access cheap finances. Lack of it increases its cost of production. Currently, cost of finance is high due to high interests, lack of development of bond market, controlled access to borrowing from foreign markets. In order to reduce these costs, credit cost need to be lowered by banks, corporate bond market strenghtened and access to foreign market be eased.

Another major challenge that increase input costs are availability and cost of inputs. Lack of adequate input to Food processing industry due to APMC market, non-availability of adequte cotton for textile, delay in granting mine leases and high tariff on import of raw material due to inverted duty structure add to cost of production. To ensure success of local production these problems need to be dealt with immediate effect.

The problem in not limited to inverted duty for inputs, the taxation issue is a cost in itself. High corporation taxes, tax uncertainity and tax terrorism, lack of tax credit availability under VAT system for intra-state trade increases the total cost. Rationalisation of taxes, tax certainity, availability of tax credit etc would ensure more competitiveness.

As if above problems were not enough, our industry facee huge logistic cost due to poor infrastructure ie Road, Railway, waterway, ports etc. Logistic cost increases the cost of product and make its uncompetitive to nations like china with lowest costs of transport. Reduction of these costs has to be the major focus on reducing the overall cost of manufacturing

Not limited to indian shores, our products face huge tariff and non-tariff barrier in foreign markets due to our lack of signing Free trade agreement. It may seem to a foreign issue but having a Free trade agreement would only reduce the costs of final product and make india lucrative for corporation to set a part of their manufacturing activity in india.

Some critics may argue that the major impediment in Make in india is not the costs described above but it is the government regulations – Registration delays, Labour regulation, land costs, corruption etc. These factor may seem different in term of costs described above but in fact are other type of costs- time costs, opportunity costs, effort cost.

Delay in registration, stringent labour regulation takes important and crucial time from the businessmen. It hinder their focus on task in hand. It forms a type of time cost especially for the entreprenuer who require singleminded focus on their startups. Costs of land due to land acquisition act and corruption also increases the costs of production. It require governance reforms to ensure simplification of tasks and bring transparency in working to check corruption.

Thus, the initiative to reduce costs of manufacturing need to an integrated and holistic one. It should focus on all problems – Financing, taxation, input availability, logistic improvement, Free Trade agreements in addition to legal and governance reforms.

Government of India has shown huge will power and intent to reduce these problems. The problems of financing are being dealt with SEBI initiative to strengthen bond market, allowing corporate to issue rupee-denominated bonds in foreign market. Input problem is being dealt with focus on APMC reform and e-National agriculture market, online auction of mines, re-negotiation of FTA to check inverted duty structure. Taxation reform under GST will ensure availability of tax credit, reduction in corporation taxes will reduce costs associated with tax issues. As far as logistic is concerned, governemtn is focussed on improving infrastrucutre and bringing multi-modal logistic for seamless flow of goods. Governance reforms and legal reforms have reduced time costs in submission of compliance certificate of labour law, online registration etc.

Sensing from the urgency shown by the government, it would not be an over-saying that – India’s path to the development would truly pass through the industrial manufacturing lead growth.

    Nice work…

    few points:::

You mentioned Mussolinin and HItler. They were able to come up with their narration of truth and people actually beleived it

Similarly in case f EU …..truth has been manipulated to make ppl vote in favor of BreXit as per your essay…

In both the cases you are actually pinitng out that truth is weak and reuire strong deenders to mobilize public opinion in fovor of it.

Thus I would argue that truth i=does not stand on its own. It is sustained only when spmeone is there to protecit. ELse it bows down to manipualtion,….at least in short term !!

However being an open ended essay, I will not say that my point of view is absolutely correct. What you have presented is logical and coherent.

Examples have made the essay more enriching.

Some arguments could have been written as to why truth is threatened and how to overcome it !

Truth stand even if there is no public support….

From the time unknown human being has constantly grappled wiht the questions regarding the truth of existence. The question of truth and falsehood were discussed at length by several religions, philosophers, sainsts and scientists. Yet truth seems to be evasive from human reach.

Truth can be broadly categorised into contextual and absolute.

Absolute truth are natural laws. Laws like birth and death of human beings and animal are undisputed and cannot change.
Similarly questions regarding basic rights like need for dignity for human existence cannot be challenged by any community.
Hindusim points out absolute truth i.e Brahman . Apart from him evry other thing is maya.

Such truths cannot be easily disputed and hence taken to be as natural law.

But world does nto function on absoulte truths alone. For all major aspects one need to recognise relative truths. Such truth depends upon time, technology, culture and polity of any place.

Several years ago people belived that earth is flat and that there is the edge beyond which one would fall into space. The hold of this tuth was so strong that scients challenging these views were denounced and imprisoned. Today we may laugh at naivity of such behaviour , but the truth was decided at that time by what public believed in.

Dadabhai Naorioji bool exposed the truth about British rue prior to which peopel including Mahatama Gandhi beleived in its benevolence and goodness. Thus truth required perseverance to build a counter narration to theory of White Man Burden.

Peace and non violenec ewas constantly publicied by saints and philosophers as basic necessity for sustainable human existence. But the world in 18th century was enmored by scientific progress and demanded war and expansionism. It was only after nuclear holocaust that peace became central part of global political discourse.

Women are at par with men may be common sense truth in modern world. But for several centuries women had been subjugated and domesticated due to cultural and religious factors taken to be absolute truth by the people. It was only die to economic progress that narration of truth began to run in favor of women thus leading to their autonomy.

Science is also not absolute and its truth largelry depends upon public support. Recently doctirs in CHattisgarh perform hyterectomy on women as young as 20 -25 yrs old. Their action was not questioned till the tome media reported the incidece . This created mass awareness abotut malpractise which led to establishment about new truth of administrative laggard and unethical practise by dictors taken to be benevolent exercise in the first place.

Economy is field in which truth is challenged and questioned everyday. Sub prime crisi whic led to global recession is such an example. Dr Raguram Rajan had predicted the looming crisi in 2005 in his book The Fault Lines. BUt interestingly no global leader paid heed to it. Thus truth about economic ramification of such policy laid buried till the actual crisis hit in 2007.

Political acitivity in modern world is rife with cases where truth which is presented is quite different from truth which is expereinced. One may see Sadi Arabia as prosperous nation , but one does not find public discourse regarding human rights violation prevalant in the region. SImilary world is all praise for China’s economic growth , but the social and environmental cost has been meekly discussed. Thus only that aspect of truth is highlighted which is benfitting some vested interest groups.

Kashmir is integral part of Inida amy be absolute truth for Indians. But India has to constantly mobilize internationla support to upkeep this truth. This truth have faced the risk of being eroded die to threats from Pakistan’s state sponsored sepratism and CHina’s agression in recent past.

Science has progressed tremendously in modern world. We all know that human being belong to same species, face similar challenges of terror , climate change, resourse shortage etc. Yet we are more divided today than we were in other timeline across hstory. It is so because the truth which we choose to beleve in is based on human construction like nationality, ethnicity , religion. etc. Until and unless public is mobilised to see the greater truth of humanity, we will continue to remain fragmented.

Thus oen can see that truth in most of the cases is like a straight tree which is vulnarable to be put under axe. It thus reuires public support to mainitiain its existence.

Truth often subside because of preferences and priorities of the society. For eg. In Saudi people priortize economic development to human right . Thus any talks on the latter issue is not prevleant in oubic discourse.

Culture also paly a role in pushing forward one truth at cost of th other. Till now caste sytem was accepted unopposed in Indian society as it was culturally justified. But this truth has given way to new truth of equality and justice since the turn of th e20th century.

Vested interest group also play important role in defining truth of the society. modern world happiness is equated with material gains. But the reality has not been like that. However the capitalist class favors consumption driven economy and thus has left no stone unturned to glamorize materialism and conspicuous consumption. Thus the truth regading happiness in modern society is not absolute but constructed reality based on mobilization of public opinion.

Thus we come to the question as how to continue our search for truth in this life and in inn future?

Truth is thus mostly in metamorphic state and needs to be analyzed time and again. One way of understanding nad exploring truth is to ensure Democracy in society. It allwos difffernt narrative to be laid beofr people to enable them to attach the pieces of the puzzle together.

Economic fulfilment is necessary to undersatnd and support truth. Emepty stomach can not think on comlex issues of truth and false.

Scince and Technology would be essential in understanding various dimension of the truth. However science shoudl be comminity oriented and not corporate oriented. It wold otherwise lead to hegemony of small section about peopel’s understanding of truth.

Finally spiritual discourses needs to be conducted to figur out commo principles which binds the humanity and gidies its existence. Sucj act would lead to overarching framework which can act as gides for understanding and sustaining truth in a better way.

Post truth phenomenon is widely being discussed today. It states that perception rather than facts are the one which drives human society. This may be partly true as human being are not automatons which process data and take uniform dcision all the time. But distortion of truth is also a threat to existence when it begins to happen on large scale and that toto in field slike politics and economic decisons.

Thus we need to rethink about ways and means to ensure that people are empowered to better judge and render support to truth without being misguided and manipulated. It is ultimately the society which decides what is true in its eyes.

Intro is good. But your answers did not provided exact demand of the question. To succeed ,cost of production need to be lowered. For this besides mentioning skill, logistics you could have wrote about land acquisition, labour laws, taxation system(though gst is good but 4 tax slab may hinder as it is based on products),entry and exit policies, digital india programme, policies(national goods and foreign policies) , trade faclitation, free trade agreement. Because these points has potential in reducing the cost of production. Otherwise well attempted

  27. IF MAKE IN INDIA HAS TO SUCCEED ,INDIA NEEDS TO BECOME A LOW COST MANUFACTURING HUB

India is emerging as the fastest growing economy with the GDP of about 7.6 according to world Bank topping world bank’s growth outlook. Amidst the world economies India’s economy appears to be silver lining. India’s economy had been largely services driven with services contributing almost 66% and the contribution of manufacturing is abysmally small. Service sector has contributed to the growth because we were able to provide low cost services, similar success can be achieved in manufacturing sector too if the cost of manufacturing is reduced. To provide a thrust to the manufacturing sector and transform India into a manufacturing hub Our PM launched a program ” Make in India”.

Make in India would provide skills to the youth to manufacture goods at low prices. Low cost of manufacturing would make the products cheaper and thus more competitive in the global market, and thus would encourage exports and also reduce imports. The success of manufacturing sector in China is largely because of low cost of manufactured products, which has flooded the world market. India is dependent on world economies for many products , make in India would could also help to fulfil its domestic demand.

For make in India to be a success low cost of manufacturing is necessary which can be possible only through skilling the youth providing, better logistics, transportation, good infrastructure , cutting edge technology .

Under the make in India 25 sectors have been priotrised like defense textiles , railways, automobiles , aviation, chemicals etc
India is largley dependent on other countries for defense equipments . The sucess of make in India would help to meet the demand of defense sector and also make India an exporter of defense equipments. Govt has floated various attractive policies for encouraging FDI in manufacturing sector.

The govt’s initiative of Sagarmala connecting hinterlands through ports is significant step . Many skilling programs like Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna , skill india program which would provide better skill to manufacture the products at low prices are steps in the right direction. The implementation of GST is further expected to encourrage make in India .

The govt needs to upgrade the existing infrastructure and provide better connectivity through rails and roads, and provide better skills to the youth, provide modern technology and make manufacturing attractive in India so that foreign firm are encouraged to set up their manufacturing hubs in India.

India has the benefit of having a large demographic dividend which can provide low cost labour and thus provide necessary impetus to the Make in India program and a strategic location on the world map with access to major shipping routes and land trade routes. Also India richly endowed with various mineral resources like iron and steel etc.

The sucess of make in India is already visible with the improvement of India’s position in World banks ease of doing buismees from 134 (2015) to 130(2016) and increase in FDI of about 40% since the launch of make in India.

The logo of Make in India is a striding lion symbolizing manufacturing, national strength and pride. The make in India program if implemented in right manner would make india a vibrant economy and the brightest spot on the world map. The success of Make in India can greatly contribute to the growth of India.

If Make In India Has To Succeed,India Needs To Become A Low Cost Manufacturing Hub—-

Make In India is an international marketing campaign inititaed by the new government to attract business from around the world to invest manufacture in India.
The Make In India is an attempt is to fullfill the purpose of job creation, impetuous to the national economy of the country, enforcemnt to secondary ,territray sector and inflow of FDI, converting India to a self reliant country and to give Indian Economy global recognition.
This Campaign is Completely under the control of the central government of India.

    Significance Of The Move—–

The aim of launching this campaign in India is to make India a world level manufacturing powerhouse which will definitely help in solving the biggest issue of Indian economy. This campaign is to lead India towards an effective destination as well as grow the Indian economy ahead. It provides a successful track of employment to the youths of country which will surely help in reducing the poverty level and other social issues in India. Make in India is a call to the top investors all across the word

Make in India campaign provides all the top investors a favorable opportunity to come in India and invest in businesses from electrical to electronics, from automobiles to agro value addition, from satellite to submarine, IT & BPM, aviation, pharmaceuticals, construction, electrical machinery, food processing, etc.Investors that no matter in whatever country you sell your products however you should manufacture in India. Youths of the India have enough talent, skill, discipline, and determination to get the goal.It Mainly Focussess On heavy industries and public enterprises while generating employment, empowering secondary and tertiary sector and utilizing the human resource .This campaign focuses on creating number of valuable and honored jobs as
well as skill enhancement in almost 25 sectors for improving the status of youths of the country

This ambitious project will transform India economically while eliminating the unnecessary laws and regulations, making bureaucratic processes easier and shorter, and make government more transparent,
responsive and accountable. Indian government focuses on building the effective physical infrastructure as well as improving the market of digital network in the country to make it a global hub for business (ranging from satellites to submarines, cars to softwares, pharmaceuticals to ports, paper to power, etc)
More employment in the country will boost the purchasing power of common man. India is a country having unique combination of demography, democracy, and demand which can benefit the investors.

The successful implementation of this plan will help in the 100 smart cities project and affordable housing in India. The main objective is to ensure solid growth and valuable employment creation in the country
with the help of top investors. It will benefit both parties, the investors and our country. The government of India has created a dedicated help team and an online portal (makeinindia.com) for the easy and effective communication of investors. A dedicated cell is committed to answer all the queries from business entities anytime.

Critisicism Surrounding The Make In India Plan—

Because of the lack of resources and clarity on policy issues, Indian businessmen too were planning to quit India and set up their business somewhere else.India has been very stringent when it comes to procedural and regulatory clearances. For healthy business environment, administrative efficiency is the need of the hour.
In order to attract foreign capital, there has been made huge changes in the defense manufacturing and insurance sectors, however according to the analyst it needs to do in more effective manner.India has to be ready to deal with the unfavorable circumstances and tackle elements that affects competitiveness manufacturing

Indias’ Make In India will be constantly compared with the Chinese Make In China Campaign as Chinese Government launched the programme as the new decision coincides with global launch of Indias’ MAKE IN INDIA, mainly focussing on high-tech imports, research and development (R&D) to upgrade the efforts to improve the manufacturing industry

India needs funds to build industries, which in turn need infrastructure, which is in itself in short supply and requires more finance. India’s banking system which is not in a position to lend much unless its balance sheets are cleared. State-controlled banks are neck-deep in losses after making provisions to cushion bad loans. If the government pumps in more to save them, it would have less to spend on infrastructure. A bankruptcy law to enable smoother shut-down of companies is yet to be passed meanwhile Indian Government trying to Woo GULF COUNTRIES in the 40,000 cr NIIF. Amid a global fall in oil prices, there may be caution all around. Most of the investment projections being made are considering a longer term.

What do Maruti, Nokia, Ford and Hyundai have in common? All have had had strikes and protests in India at their manufacturing plants in the past two years alone. Unlike in China, where a communist government can
(strangely) keep workers in control and wage costs in check, India has labour laws and organised unions that can hinder smooth expansion. It is not easy for the Modi government to change laws to make a dramatic
    impact.

A report by consulting firm Ernst & Young said in 2012 that India lags far behind other nations in imparting skills training to its workers. Not too much has changed since then. A major effort has got underway under the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), but this needs time to develop.
The government’s Economic Survey said last year that the skilled workforce in India is counted at a mere 2%, while the NSDC estimated a need for 120 million skilled people in the non-farm sector– which would
make it 10% of the population at current levels. Dearth of vocational education facilities and lack of training facilities are a key part of India’s industrial landscape.

India’s industry has grown over the past six decades either through pampered public sector companies or through domestic industries enjoying access to a market protected by customs duties. Long-term
competitiveness now required in an open global environment needs huge investments in research and development. Indian companies now need to doublel their efforts with the state-run Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,India with its 38 national laboratories and more than 13,000 scientific personnel. But CSIR is seen as a slothful bureaucracy.

    Present Scenario—-

Foxconn, the manufacturer of Apple’s iPhones has announced plans for creating 10-12 facilities in
India, which will include factories and data centers. Foxconn expects to sign the first contract by the end of 2015. That Foxconn chose India following various issues it faced in its Chinese facilities, bolsters
the “Make in India” campaign. The advantages the arrival of a big company to the country can be manifold

Mercedes Benz has brought into the “Make in India” program in two different areas. Firstly, in the luxury car segments, it has decided to manufacture more of its components in India – thus increasing the localization of its new model C220 CDI to 60%. Secondly, Mercedes Benz has also decided to manufacture its luxury buses in India.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea will work with Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Vizag to build warships in India.Another south korean industry samsung also agreed to build LNG tankers with kochi shipyard

Indian Railways has invited bids by international suppliers for the procurement and manufacture of 15 train sets and In Aviation Sector,AIRBUS has choosen India to join the MAKE IN INDIA BANDGAON and Secondly the recent deal with France on jets is RAFALE , Indian government
has been able to extract substantial investment in India in the future. Thirdly,PRATT and WHITNEY us based firm also keen to invest in INDIA

Creating opportunities to such a vast talent pool is a humongous task. The efforts in improving the unorganized sector outlook is a story for another day.

If Make In India Plan Implemented Well and Achieved its desire goal it will lead to cheer up multinational companies as well as domestic companies at national and international level in order to manufacture products in India which facilitates all the big business investors worldwide who want to do business in India. It is a big step taken by the government of India to reduce the level of unemployment faced by the youths of the
    country.
