We donot inherit earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. These remarks assume huge importance in the present context when anthropogenic activities have heralded Earth into a new geological era called Anthropocene.

New Era is marked by numerous problems like Global warming and climate change, Pollution of environmental components – Air, water, soil in addition to degradation of forests. The root cause for the problem is Human environment interaction in the name of economic development. So, new era demands new approach to development to ensure that each living being irrespective of species, age, gender,socio-economic status, nationality gets quality life without endangering the possibility of future generation to do so.Simply said, Sustainable development is the need of hour.

    Historical perspective in concept development:
Sustainable development approach has informal beginning in book titled ‘ Silent Spring ‘ by Rachel carlson. He was saddened by the effect of pollutants on the bird population. Later, Club of rome, a society came up with a study called Limits to Growth which predicted that based on current level of development mankind would be doomed in the near future by about 2100. But, the real push to the concept came up in Rio summit on UNEP which defined the concept and brought this issue into limelight at Inter-governmental level.

Need for a new pathway- Problem with the earlier approach:
The reason for such an initiative at the global level led by UN agency was the magnitude of effects of human economic growth in developed nations. The industrial revolution in western world lead to exponential rise in Carbon-dioxide emission which lead to rise in global temperatures , climate change and melting of ice-shelves. Additionally, ozone layer depletion due to CFC release added to the scare. Various projections of future economic development showed that current type and level of economic development is impossible to continue forever. Moreover, it was felt and understood that most marginalised section of the society would be at the recieving end due to environmental degradation.

    New pathway:
Convinced with the immediate need for change, the sustainable development approach was formulated which focussed equally on three components: Economy, Environment and Equity in society. It was felt that use of this approach in plans and economic vision documents would ensure that humankind could taste the fruit of development for ever in future.

All for one, one for all – Three Musketeers Approach
Nations signatory to Rio Declaration on sustainable development acknowledged that this approach was the best in league due to its inclusive ideology not limited to human world.

All living beings are intended to be benefitted from this development approach. The Convention on Biodiversity, Convention on Migratory species ensured that national governments place due focus on wildlife and plant kingdom. It has ensured that the most vulnerable of the communities get the highest level of protection. World has thus been able to ensure that Rhino and Tigers are protected from poaching and habitat destruction.

As far as Humans as part of living being is concerned, the development would ensure that Poor, Middle class and Rich get benefitted. The best part being that this approach focusses on equity aspect, so poor would get more focus in development process than rich individuals. MGNREGS and other poverty elimination schemes eg Self employment show the new way of uplifting them.

Not limited to financially marginalised, this approach would help us uplift the socially marginalised section like women, children, elderly, disabled. It is needed because any negative or harmful effect is most likely to be felt exponentially by this section of population. Thus, Sustainable development goals for government involved improving nutrition, education, social security, health services etc for these sections of the society.

Our societies have experienced urbanisation which is increasing at an exponential level. This component of society is itself mired with problem of air, water pollution, congestion , slums which impact all the residents- elite and non-elite. The new approach will ensure that our cities are worth living and allow quality life with good health. Rural population which consist of most needy of the people are also assured of the benefits especially via Sustainable Agriculture which is maintstay of their economy.

The sustainablilty of economy hinges on agriculture sustainability. Agriculture in present day faces problem of soil pollution and degradation, falling yield and poor quality produce. Sustainability will ensure that people produce and consume quality produce, improve yields with environmental health being maintained. Similarly,Sustainable Industrial growth will include diverse opportunities via recycling, use and produce of renewable energy – solar, wind, biomass etc. Service sector would see reduced cost by teleconferences without need for physical movement of people, more demand for efficiency improving software eg Big data.

This significance holds equally true for all nations. Developed nations require it to ensure that they reduce emissions which otherwise would have delibitating effect on us all. Developing nations like India need it to ensure that they adapt to impending climate change and reduce future emissions. But, it is the need to ensure the continued existence of Island communities and nations which is a major force behind its adoption.

However, there are some lone dissent voices that climate change is a scare by western media. Donald trump was a vocal critic of climate change deal and intend to pull out of it. This approach of Trump is not in interest of Americans and the world as they may fall back in technological focus and research in this field.

Thus, sustainable development is the only liberator for the world at this point of time. This approach can help people move out of poverty , help nations tackle climate change, ensure food security, quality of life for all especially the marginalised. However, this achievement would require a global movement in order to nudge the non-movers like Mr Trump. Multilateral organisations need to pressurise the industries, nations which harm the other people. Moreover, the nations, industries and individuals need to assume moral responsiibility to ensure success of sustainable development initiatives as small as checking public littering, checking the use of plastics to taxation on fossil fuel and subisidy for cleaner ones.

This is essential to ensure that our future generations live in a more clean, healthy, equitable world full of economic opportunities. But, the path to sustainable development begin from within us. Are we ready to lead the change ? We all love our children, dont we ?

  23. Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all

“OURS CAN BE FIRST GENERATION TO END POVERTY – AND THE LAST GENERATION TO ADDRESS THE
CLIMATE CHANGE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE”

Development taking into account the concerns of future generations – Are we really concerned about our future generation. It is a big question mark. The day to day human activity does not care about these things. Everyone is in a race for development whether it will lead to gradual destruction of our Earth. The concept, though looks very simple, is a generational change in human thinking about our Environment.

Brundtland Commission in its report “Our Common Future”, in 1980s, for the first time reveled the deterioration of Environment. Since than several international and national summits have taken place like Kyoto protocol, Montreal protocol , Paris climate Summit etc. Some of them were binding in nature while others were non- binding which resulted in poor attention towards it. And, now in fact Nations are unwilling to accept these owing to several economic constraints.it seems that the idea of sustainable development is being faded.

The main problem for this is the clash between economic development and environment. It demands for balancing short term economic interest for long term environment sustainability. The inclination towards achieving high economic development results in exploitation of Environment without caring for our future generation.

Its implications are grave. The quality of water, air and land has continuously deteriorated. It is projected that unless the present situation changes, millions would be thirsty across the globe by 2025. The crop productivity and total production would decrease owing to land degradation, despite a rising population, leaving many hungry. Carbon dioxide levels have already breached the alarming level of 440 ppm (IPCC) and consequent increased global warming would melt polar ice caps and mountain glaciers, increasing the mean sea level. Thus, the frequency of both floods and drought, paradoxically, would increase and rising sea levels would submerge coastal areas and low-lying nations such as Maldives. Also, the incidence of tropical diseases would increase with rising temperature of earth. These implications are not exhaustive, but they do provide a picture of the future crisis, to be faced solely by the coming generations.

Of course, resource extraction from the earth can not be stopped, but with moderate and judicious use it can be made sustainable. A balance needs to be achieved between the short-term and long.term interests and the importance of conservation and concern for nature, in this, can not be understated. We have not received the earth from the ancestors to exploit it the way we want, rather, we are only the ephemeral guardians of this treasure-trove, whose future guardians are waiting. And, it would be wrong on our part to cheat them by finishing the treasure in the trove, leaving only the guardianship to them.

India’s great moral leader Mohandas Gandhi famously said that there is enough on Earth for everybody’s need, but not enough for everybody’s greed. Today, Gandhi’s insight is being put to the test as never before.

    1. Without economic development, any potential for political openness and freedom will be questionable.
Economic development is a multifaceted concept .it means different to different people .It is an umbrella world which in itself includes sustainable development , gdp growth, millennium development goals .
After independence the main goal of our economy was reducing poverty , industrialisation, self reliance etc .These all together means economic development for Indian economy .that time it was difficult to quantify development and with their advent of time new indexes like gross national happiness, human development index etc helped us to think about development in different ways .

In some advanced countries , no doubt they are economically developed but freedom provided to different individuals and political openness is not fully achieved .Donald trump the president of usa recently passed certain bills in the Senate that are going to impact the freedom of Indian citizens like h1b visa issue , developing a wall across the Mexico .In one way it is appeasing the people of America and in other way he is curbing the freedom of people of other countries.

Amartya sen and Jean dreze look at economic development from different perspective .They believe economic development means when a person can easily and freely live in full life cycle or month cycle .In developing countries people cannot even fulfill their basic needs how economic development impacted them is different from the people above poverty line in the same country.

When it comes to political openness in India , this year government start thinking about electoral bonds or one people can only fund upto 2000 rupees for donation .to make electoral process neat and clean , economic development no doubt played a vital role but it will require more than 2 or 3 decades to make it cashless or digital or free from corruption.

With the help of various indices like ease of doing business etc we can judge our level and try to improve. According to post modernists economic development has taken commercialisation to another level so that they freedom of individual got hampered

It can be concluded that economic development for few of us bring happiness , freedom and joy and for few it still have no meaning .india after economic reforms of 1991 and 2011 improved a lot in various indices and need to work more hard .

  33. I think, you missed the central theme of essay. Firstly, if the statement is true then you need to produce supporting arguments which I think you missed.
The key points of topic are Economic development, political openness and freedom which are demanding definition. Even the advantages of economic development and how it will impact people and their lives are missing and how the ED will be helpful in political openness and freedom are also missing.
The intro part needs improvment and the conclusion part too.
connectivity absent when switching from one para to another. However the points you raised are good but need organisation.
After all I’m not an essay expert..I’m commenting as per my knowledge..

  37. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IS THE PATHWAY TO THE FUTURE WE WANT FOR ALL

World today is developing by leaps and bounds. In our run to development we have forgotten that our activities are adversely harming the earth. Our activities have caused great damage to earth and the development is no longer sustainable. Sustainable development means that using the resources carefully so that demands of both present and future generation can be met without causing any harm to the environment.

Sustainable development is the need of today as earth is day by day getting polluted and the result are untimely rains, flood in one part and drought in the other part, rising global warming and ozone hole over the Antarctic. The Industrial revolution in which many industries were set up has caused emission of harmful gases and caused great damage to the earth. Rising no of vehicles on the road has added to the problem. Many species of plants and animals have disappeared from the face of Earth and it is said if these problems continue man too may be on the verge of extinction.

The UN has set 17 sustainable goals to transform the future of Earth namely ending poverty and hunger improving education and health , making cities sustainable , combating climate change , protecting forests and oceans . Sustainable development calls for holistic development of all.

Most of the developing countries today dependent on non renewable sources have started moving towards renewable sources and special thrust is laid on solar wind energy etc and to reduce the emission of carbon , carbon tax is introduced and carbon trading is done. Many Countries have agreed to major conventions like Kyoto , Montreal and Paris Climate Convention to undo the harm done to the plant and reduce the emission of harmful gases . India has decided to add a carbon sink of 2.5 million by increasing forest cover under its INDC commitments.

Sustainable development requires adoption of sustainable lifestyles . Maintaining tree cover, avoiding non-renewable resources and move towards cleaner resources and the progress and prosperity of all. Wiping the evil of hunger malnutrition poverty and hunger . It requires greater cooperation among the nations as the effect of dangers of the unsustainable development would be born by all.

Since we can not go back to the stone age but it is high time that we realise the importance of sustainable development and mend our ways . Due importance should be given to sustainable ways. Unmindful actions of human beings has already caused a great harm to the planet Earth . We need to join our hands to move towards sustainable development. As Ban ki Moon said – There is no plan ‘B’ because there is no planet ‘B’. We need to mend our ways for our own existence before it is too late.

Without Economic Development,Any Potential For Political Opennes And Freedom Will Be Questionable—— This Statement Is Inevitably true.

With The progress of the so many countries,it has been clearly proved that a strong economy is the key foundation to a strong nation. The United states of America has strengthened its foothold on the economy because of a financial state as a world power it has the capability of more and more democratic government. The United states of America has pushed the envelope towards acheving the government of the nations capable of sustaining the strong financial grip.

Democracy is a form of rule, described most aptly by Abraham Lincoln as a rule – ‘by the people, for the people and of the people’. In recent times, it has evolved into an indirect and pluralist form of governance. It is pluralist because a variety of interest groups influence the decision making process so as to achieve a favorable outcome for them. In this process the voice of minorities and marginal members of society are drowned and poverty stricken country ie Africa (as earlier it is ruled by APARTHEID Law or and it has its own long and full of struggle to achieve democracy) it is relatively become impossible to develop laws, rules and leaders in either two situation.

To counter such ills of democracy, social movements have played a big role.Social movements happening in USA, India and other parts of the world have shown that democracy remains the best form of government ie WOMEN SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT all over The Europe and US,There was a time when governments’ did not allow women and poor to participate in the elections. In theri earliest forms goverments allow only men who owned property and educated to vote. This mean that women and poor were the property less and uneducated were not allow to vote.In India ,before independence only a small minority was allowe to vote and they therefore came together to determine the fate of the majority.GANDHIJI were shocked at the unfairness of the practice and demanded that all adults have the right to vote.
Women and the poor have to fight for their participation in government.Womens’ Struggle to vote got strenghtened during the FIRST WORLD WAR.Therer are over 200 million illiterate women in INDIA this low literacy negatively impacts not just their lives but also their famlies and economic condition of the country.

Once a country has made a strong progress towards strong economy,it can stablized through Politics.Immigrants polices have been ongoing political debate since 20th century. This can be proven by looking at the India’s ambitious scheme to waive the visa requriment for business visitors and tourists from 18 countries,Which is considered critical to economic and trade strategy. The sole intention behind this proposal is to contributation towards making INDIA an attractive destination from investors from RECEP countries,Keeping in mind the MAKE IN INDIA POLICY boosting India’s service trade and help from foregin exchange and can have a huge impetous towards INDIA’s economy and how the economic condition of a country is a primary objective in shaping its politics.

Immigrants polices have been ongoing political debate since 20th century. Most Immirgants prefer to move towards a develped countries so that they can have a more opportunities to succeed and could better themselves. When an unskilled workers enters a nation it become the governments’ job to finance education, health and employemnt opportunities. In an area where immigrants do not provide such tools they tend to work on low wages and creates more immigrant native conflict.
In a country like EUROPE,they provide eassy access on immigrant facility from NETHERLAND and SPAIN.

The Fall between Russia and Soviet Union is solely based on the Economic Failure. As Poor nation is in danger of lossing social order but it rose to power under the dictatorship of stalin.A Dictatorship can also help the country to rose the power and full grown into the economies.US has a little role to play between the Russia and SOviet Russia disintegration as it tried to make them a capitalist economy. But it failed miserably.

The Russia,South Africa ,US,and India have different policies. Those policies are largely influenced by the Economic Activity. We all come from a fragmented world, but the ability to sustain a democracy, paralimentary, governmant are solely depend on how much a country creates within its economy. The US has bounced back after a great depression and was able to remain a great democracy it is safe to assume that as people become more aware of democratic processes and institutions, government functioning will become more transparent and accountable. People’s participation in policy making and implementation is lifeblood of an efficient democracy and social movements are precisely that. Social movements bring a sense of belongingness and a feeling of patriotism among people. It makes democracy not only a form of government but a way of life
It largely indicates the politics may not work and may not be the best interest of the people but it will survive and stablized largely based on the economic condition of the nation.
