    No problemo friend ??

  2. I dont know what you mean by objective.
yes, the opinion should be avoided but a hint to what you believe can be carefully placed with some quote or some rhetorical question which keeps one guessing……

you can have a subjective analysis or subjective understanding of observation.

an introduction is a small space to straight away get to opinions u know first you have to build premise.

  3. zaroor

  4. hey i could have done same for you but the issue is i could only download few images as my internet connections sucks ‘bigly’

from them what i could understand was that you were very sincere and simple in your approach.

when my data pack gets renewed i would surely put an effort.

I really appreciate your analysis and by and far agree with you.
    Could you answer the question:
1)Shall the introduction be more objective and opinion be left for the body?

If possible could you please review the other part of essay ?

  9. Hi! Yes, I need to work on arrangement and flow. Thanks for review.

  10. I can be wrong 🙂

  11. i can understand shahjahan much better now as i felt sudden urge to cut your hands for such a beautiful handwriting .you know like the liam neeson inside me saying ‘i will find you and cut your hands’

your essay is good and ideas have been arranged nicely. and @disqus_kMXnrpDdbX:disqus has given good suggestions you should incorporate.

  12. yeah that is a blunder ….opium was used in a wrong sense by marx……

  13. instead of of explaining opium’s bad and good:-

‘Opiads derived from opium are used in medicine eg morphine acting as a life saver and giver for many. On the other hand, same opium and its derivates like heroin can be lethal when abused.’

you could have explained religions good or bad:-

‘similarly religion on one hand can garner cooperation among two remotely linked people, while on the flipside it can also instil hatred among neighbours ‘ (JUST TO GIVE IDEA not a perfect line )

above line in the introduction is irrelevant

    in the second paragraphs:-

Similarly, it is how one interprets, uses and apply religion and its tenants matters the most in terms of its outcomes. Religion refers to a set of values, rites, rituals, places and mode of worship. Religion seems as old as society when group of people worshipped the totem ie tree, stones. But, spirituality came to be associated with humans before they started to live in societies. Reason being spirituality is about an individual and his/her relation to self, nature, universe and divine and meaning associated with them. Thus, spirituality is to religion what conscience is to ethics.

first line :- giving justification to a problem you have not introduced that is religion.
second line :- brief definition of religion
third line :- time line of religion compared with sudden introduction of spirituality in forth line.
fifth line :- defining spirituality to explain timeline case of religion and spirituality put in previous lne.
sixth line:- concluding with a syllogism with another complex relation that you believe about conscience and ethics

my opinion:- you are trying a dangerous screenplay here. instead of explaining things it bombards one with something you believe without laying ground work this is your second para and you show hurry to jump to main theme.

  14. hey
you know lot of stuff but you have bad arrangement of ideas and coherence is missing with missing of relevant placements and timing,

how human development will link to human values, indian education is missing value based approach,
why india needs gender equality that has to brought in first then the mckinsey report.

but overall you have lot of ideas in the topic and facts to justify them.

  15. this is not a philosophical topic so when you attempt it you should have some statistics, definitions and other economic outcome measuring indices awareness like gini coefficient,

Read your introductory paragraph you used word ‘human development’ so many times. It similar to saying cow has for leg cow gives us milk cow eats grasses.

In introduction you set premise for discussion slowly take to reader into main theme. for example could explain why the debate about human development find prominence when economic growth had to have it implicitly factored in theoretically.

why mismatch between growth and human development?

how we measure economic growth and why human development was not taking place in this context so as to trigger criticism for gdp gnp to be used to measure it ,

    you should have mentioned:-
    – some economist :eg amartya sen
    – countries using different measures like BHUTAN.
    – department of happiness in MADHYA PRADESH GOV
    – neglect of women in development
    – demographic dividend

you have many good ideas in your essay.

    Thank you..
I will certainly take away what i feel is important from your review.
but i don’t really think i m portraying my ‘childish enthusiasm’ here. 😛

  17. hey!

lots of ideas chaotically placed creating confusion rather than understanding.
i felt tired reading your essay, it was very complex to traverse with words placed as they excited you.

you portray childish enthusiasm in your essay as one can see you demonstrate vagueness :-

1).line no 1… ‘stone age or metal age’
    2) last line para 1 ‘ingredient or process’

you are not having long chat with your friend you are writing an essay to show your authority and give your piece of mind to a stranger so that he can appreciate analytical as well as communication abilities for the same.

I disagree with MALYAJ that plain and simplicity is not creativity. The real problem was confusion and lack of flow from one sentence to other and introduction of sudden new point in one big sentence.

    conclusion is confusing and random.

hey you did a great job to write the essay and you will surely improve. look at me i am so lazy to write one and delayed enough to even start reading others. 🙂

  20. Friend,my intention of mentioning the first point was – if the examiner happens to be of sociological inclination,he may find it controversial and you never know then.
I reviewed it based on my sociology optional studies which by and large reflects Marx critical of religion.

Wow, what an analysis. Hatsoff to your effort. I appreciate your review.

    1) I beg differ from your understanding of karl marx on the statement. He acknowledged the importance of religion as a comforter of stressed masses like an opiad. refer wikipedia or google the term. But, still i will be more careful with controversial statements.

2)No, i didnot copy paste anything, plagiarism is something i consider unethical.

3)I wanted to take a practical stand that spirituality for all is something very difficult to achieve. Thus, religion shall have more significance

4)Being a question demanding critical comment. I feel it necessitated a balanced approach. Otherwise, it requires a hard stand

    Thanks dear ?

  24. 1.Beautiful introduction.
But that is technically a blunder ,my friend because the context of Karl Marx saying so was not similar to your analogue. What he wanted to say was – bourgeoisie on the name of the religion will exploit proletariat ,despite of providing them basic necessities like food, shelter, health, education etc;they will sensitize them wrt religion for the vested interests.
In short,it was all negative – nothing like using it as a medicine.

It is an example of “half knowledge is always dangerous”.Please avoid.

2.Somewhat similar, sanatan dharma was the term coined in 20th century.
Please please avoid technical mistakes as they can be complete turn offs.
If you have even minimal confusion, avoid writing about it.

You could have substituted it for Hinduism,I suppose.

3.Such multi dimensions – economic, psychological, environment and polity in good aspects of religion.Keep up the good work.

4 Bad aspects of religion are holistic and comprehensive in itself. Brilliant !

    5. Critique part of spirituality lacks originality unlike other parts.I can smell it being copy pasted from somewhere because it is where your movie gets deviated before reaching the climax. Disappointed .
P.S: Positively let me know if I am right to sense this 😛

    6. I would love it if you would taken a firm stand in a straight line.Towards the climax,I can not perceive clearly whether you want it to be religious identity or spiritual one.

GS answers are tend to be that diplomatic but it is advisable to take a stand while writing an essay.May be because after reading 5-6 pages of masala, examiner is lost about the holistic view of the candidate. That may be counter productive.

    7. Above all,of all the essays read on the topic,it was better than all even after above mentioned points. This point is enough to make you realize your potential.
Keep writing.Your essay was worth all the time i spent here to review :).God bless you !

    * These views are personal.Anyone is free to deviate.Request you take them constructively.

    * Request to all the aspirants reading me,please don’t read from links like GS answers while attempting essays because it leads to myopic vision.Follow “let the ideas flow” approach. Will be much more beneficial. After writing you can search here and there what else you could have written to prepare better for the final day.

    * Apologies for making it lengthier than few essays 😛

  25. Thank you for the review Sir.
I will make a note of these points to come up with something better.
I by and large agree with you .

it is fine if you want to make charts and flow diagrams – but what is important that it must be relevant to your content.
it should not appear as forced input just because you had to.
Essay is different from GS in the way that in Essay UPSC wants to see your originality in analysis along with width of your thoughts. if that can be reflected by using map charts diagram, go for it, but don’t force it.

  28. ECONOMIC GROWTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT NEED TO GO HAND IN HAND. HUMAN VALUES NEED TO BE ADVOCATED.
‘’There is more to life than simply increasing its speed’’ says the father of our nation. The growth development relation has been one of the trickiest issues of modern times. Often the two have been in synergy with each other but there are times when the two have crossed paths. However, there has been acceptance on the fact that a blind adherence to just economic growth cannot be called as real progress or development. Without development which includes human, environmental, medical and above all ethical, growth loses its meaning.
Simply put economic growth may be defined as the upward journey in economic indices like GDP, PPP etc. Development on the other hand means how this increase in the economic statistics translates into benefit for Human being and thing associated with them. It also means growing at a pace and in the direction that can be sustained for long, without detrimental effects.
    GROWTH WITHOUT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT—AN ANOMALY
In the 69 years of its independence, India has become the 3rd largest economy in the world. At the time of independence only 11% of our population could read and write. Today that figure has raised to 74 %( census 2011). Only 2 decades after it lended from the IMF, India has managed to become its donor. These are all indices of climbing the stairs of growth. In a linear perspective they can be concluded as paths of human development also.
But being a multi-dimensional idea that development is, it does not just look at figures. We have grown as an economy but still have the largest number of BPL population in the world. We have increased the number of literates in our country but the standard of education is still to be improved to match global standard levels.( ASER findings)
Hence we can claim real growth of our nation when no Indian sleeps empty stomach. The real development in India can come when the amount of money spent on defence budgets can be diverted to food, education and medicines. When growth becomes growth for people then we can say we have truly grown or developed.
GROWTH WITHOUR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT—DISPARITY AND ALIENATION
The recently released Oxfam report has both good and bad news for the world. It states in the number of millionaires and billionaires. It also says both the number of poor as well as the gap between resources possessed by the world’s poor and rich has increased.
It is this stress of growth without of human development that causes unaffordable education, medicine and even food to many people on the world. The result it breeds is increase in sufferings. Long before Gandhi Ji said that the’’ rich man is but a trustee of community’s wealth and resources”. If today the resources were not concentrated in few hands, growth would by default translate into development.
    GROWTH WITHOUT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT– UNSUSTAINABLE
As Amartya Sen says ‘’ any growth without investment in human development is both unsustainable and unethical’’. As the factory system progressed unabated, it slowly led to pollution of environment. Economically countries became rich at the cost of harming nature. Now it is beginning to harm humans by inducing climate uncertainties which are affecting agriculture and food security. It is also demanding a type of reverse investment like investing in clean development mechanism, developing alternative technologies etc.
Another area where linear idea of growth is now dominating our minds is automation. We are beginning to invent machines which behave closely like humans. But in doing so humans who lack skills are being neglected. This may prove to be counterproductive. Certain sections of population which are being neglected can turn to violence, drug abuse etc. Thus we should strive to create growth for humans and not growth without humans.
    GROWTH DEVELOPMENT AND VALUES
Science without humanity and Knowledge without character are two of the seven social sins according to Gandhi Ji. Thus he brings forth the utility of ethics and values in human life and progress. Any model of development which does not take ethical dimensions into account is doomed to despair.
The most important value that humans need to have and keep upfront in the professional contributions is HUMANITY. The following example may explain that. In the late 1920s, a nuclear research programme started for the benefit of mankind by a group of scientists under Albert Einstein. It was supposed to contribute to medicine, power generation etc. Very soon it took a deadly form. It turned into the MANHATTAN PROJECT for development of the atomic bomb. Here the research was same, the material used was same but intend and aim differed. In real sense the values differed. A constructive work turned into destructive.
Another human value without which development is incomplete is compassion and empathy. The absence of these may bring us growth but that growth would be destructive rather than constructive. It would be like what Joesph Stalin aimed in the Soviet Union. A blind adherence to economic and scientific growth even at the cost of death and destruction.
    BUILDING A VALUE SYSTEM
Long ago men strived for material comforts in life. Today as life has become relatively easier, man has forgotten his roots. A rat race dominates not only the world but human minds also. In this blind race without destination, values have taken a backseat.
Today our education focuses on logic, maths, botany, embryology etc. It however has no place for AXIOLOGY, the study of values and ethics. Human education should be the basic vehicle of value internalisation. Teachers should train young minds not only in aptitude but integrity also. As ALEXANDER said about his education, ‘’ I would have not been half the person I am but for my mother and my teacher’’ (ARISTOTLE). Family is another place where value systems are developed. It is a young child’s first world. Parents should teach the young ones about values not only in world but more importantly in deed.
Today we have a very important model of sustainable development goals to strive for. It aims to achieve growth in such a way that humans are placed at the centre. If we focus on just growth we may face a million mutinies but if we make growth human centric, these mutinies will turn into a million opportunities. The need to day is to recall what Pythagoras said long ago ‘’ Man is the measure of all things””

    Hi, nice attempt.

    Suggestions:
1)your scanning makes it a bit unreadable
2)I couldnot get to see the good and bad of religion
3)the structure of your essay was not able to convince me how the bads associated with religion can be overcome with spirituality
4)a critique was also needed for spirituality as it is a criticaly comment question

  35. As per various toppers, flow diagrams ,charts are not meant for essays.

  36. Hey,I am mentioning few points which i genuinely felt reading this essay as an UPSC examiner 😛 :
1.The essay starts plain .Hence, the first impression of candidate being creative in narrating ideas is lost.
According to various blogs,it is highly recommended to start an essay with creative intro whether a good quote, anecdote etc.
Even you will agree to this , I suppose.

2.Essay lacks a multidimensional view(impact of religion on contents of UPSC syllabus either good or bad) neither it is substantiated with current happenings etc.

3.Conclusion is mind blowing.Keep it up.

4.My very personal opinion,so much instances from vedas and Hindu relegion and less or no from other religion potrays you as a hindu(may be you are not).In short, try to balance it especially in such topic which requires high tolerance 😛 🙂 .

    5. Rest, the flow is good.beautiful language has been used.It contains many take aways

.Keep writing. You have the right aptitude. God bless you !

  43. Sherlock sorry for delay in my work..Was stuck in some work ..
Firstly I would like to say nice try u have a courage to attempt. some suggestion as per my understanding and knowledge..
1.Write spellings properly..Because it was very hard for me at the time of reading ..So just predict, can examiner put that much effort??
2.u used excessive number of example which is also not good ..Use limited example 2 or 3 is more than enough.
3.u have content but proper structuring is needed which will come with time..So don’t be demotivated..
4.as u confessed u made so many grammatical mistakes it is good that u know where u performed mistakes..Work on it it will improve..Don’t be distracted..Always remember (,langaugae is not a knowledge it’s just a medium through which u can interact ).
    5. As per my thinking vocabulary has to be used in essay but it doesn’t mean that be verbose..Use limited vocabulary ..(read Aarushi mam post for essay she utterly said use simple words ) .. Simplicity always wins ?.
So work hard and be positive everything will be taken care off .Don’t think to much..Because the thing which we have is time and the ability to work hard..

Karl Marx famously quoted that “Religion is the opium of masses”. As addictive they are, it is their use which determines their usefulness or goodness and badness. Opiads derived from opium are used in medicine eg morphine acting as a life saver and giver for many. On the other hand, same opium and its derivates like heroin can be lethal when abused.

    Religion- an overview

Present day popular religions came into being few thousand years back , earliest beingSanatan Dharma, Buddhism and Jainism. Slowly, new religion came into being like Christianity, Islam with the latest entrant being Sikhism.

Although, all theist religions show us the way to reach god and are true in themselves , it our interpretation that has borne mixed fruits for the mankind. Wise people interpreted them in a way to bring peace , justice and love whereas Unwise brought inequality, violence in the name of same religion.

    Positive aspect related to religions:

Religion has been a boon for mankind due to the associated benefits that humans reaped from the ideologies of their originators in ethical,socio- economic, environment, political spheres.

Religions gave to the societies the ethical code of conduct mandatory for the society to stick to. It is the adherence to such values that mankind proceeded to a more civilised societies. Lord Buddha prescribed various do and dont for his followers. Sticking to peace and abjuring violence , not taking what is not ours etc have improved the societies and streamlined their functioning.

Not limited to values , religion also focussed on improving socio-economic conditions prevalent then. Buddhism , Sikhism had foccused on ensuring social justice to marginalised section like Shudras(Schedule castes), Women. Such religions also foccussed on improving economic conditions of the locals not just the followers. Baba Banda Bahadaur(a Sikh warrior) established a sikh state and took to land reforms by distributing land among poor peasants irrespective of their religions in present day Punjab region back in 17th century.

The state based on religious ideas by Banda Bahadaur was motivated from ideas of Guru Gobind singh who fought against oppressive Mughal empire to bring power to the masses. Idea of Ram Rajya pertaining to the type of state managed by Lord Ram before exile is still considered as an Ideal form of political system.

Lord Ram during his exile stayed in forests for 14 years before returning to ayodha, Buddha also stayed in forests where he attained enlightenment under banyan tree. All our religions have shown a common love and respect for nature and its components like trees, rivers. It is this importance of environmental consciousness that one needs in the present context of pollution, deforestation and environmetal degradation especially with respect to Ganga pollution

    Negative aspect related to religion:

Irony , it may seem that knowingly or unknowingly, an important factor in environmental pollution is relgious rites and rituals. River Sabrimala in south has been polluted by clothes thrown into by devotees as a part of religious ritual, River ganga in north is polluted by human remains and offerings.

It is the irrationality, superstition and such ideologies that have come with our religious beliefs that are cause of a huge concern as inserting human remains in Ganga is said to help us attain Moksha. Such belief donot consider its impact on human health in present life.

Not limited to health aspect of society, religion in past has impacted whole socio-economic structure. Caste system in India, Women related issues like Sati and disempowerment have had their legitimacy in religion. Education in sankrit was not allowed to Dalits. This inturn had lead to their economic disempowerment. Dalits were not allowed to own lands and had to work on field of zamindars. The present land holding pattern shows that SC own miniscule assets.

Such was the hold of priestly class that politically there was skewness in rights and power held. Ruling classes with their association with priestly class attained legitimacy to rule. It was common with Mughal rule with Aurangzeb having support of Muslim clerics. Sikh militancy in Punjab had a sikh priest at its pivot. So, does the Islamic State in Iraq. As an impact, common civilians in such areas had to bear the brunt of Fundamentalism and Radical ideas.

    Spirituality as a reforming agent:

Negatives associated with religion necessitate us delve deep into the reason for their misuse. The barbaric people associated with such wrongdoings eg Islamic state lacked a crucial aspect of being religious ie spirituality. Spirituality is a broader concept and includes religion as a subset within.

Religion being a double – edged sword can be used by individuals according to their narrow interpretation of religious books. Whereas, Spiritual individual even if athiest would imbibe within them some basic values like humanity, rationalism, honesty etc. Such individual would try to connect themselves with nature, see good in others, love people even if they hold divergent views.

Such a spiritual individual would love nature and will be environment friendly , love others thus would abjure violence and crime , respect women , downtrodden, lower castes, poor. Spiritualty in a civil servant would align with civil service values like empathy, compassion, dedication. Moreover, such a civil servant would be a secular individual and will serve people irrespective of similarity of his religion with the public

    Critique of spirituality:

Despite, all the goodness assocaited with it, spirituality is an ideal for mankind. But, for a human to be spiritual , they have to encounter a life changing incident , something akin to Buddha’s sightings, which most of humans fail to encounter or take notice of.

This, leads to a practical concern of imbibing spiritual values in all. It is where religion comes into play. Religion were formed by spiritual beings like Nanak, Kabir, Jesus , Prophet Mohd. to improve general human lot.

Thus, the significance of religion cannot be undermined for general population where spiritual beings are too few to be noticed. Religion being a more practical and directive approach to an individual to be good and ethical in life. With, a dose of religion individual can learn to be spiritual and would ultimately understand that at the end , all religion are just various paths to achieve a similar goal of attaining merger with the supreme spiritual being, the God which resides well within us.

  57. Manish lives in america. Recent hate crime against indians made him buy an gun. Similarly many people would by weapons for security. This would create a growth in weapon manufacturing companies & contribute to overall economic growth of nation. But all this happened due to growing insecurties in people. Thus economic growth doesn’t necessarily corelate with human development.
    What is economic growth?
Economic growth is an increase in amount of goods & services produced per head of population over a period of time. It is measured in growth of gross domestic product. India’s growth rate in 2015-16 was 7.9 % .
    pros :
It creates wealth. It helps create jobs & increase incomes. It increases standard of living, even if it is not evenly distributed. Govt has more tax revenues. It sets up positive spiral – rising demand encourages investment in capital machinary which helps accelerate economic growth & to create more employment.
    Cons :
Violates principle of fairness & equity thus setting of social conflicts. Environmental costs are another risk.
    What is human development?
United nations development programme defined human development as “ the process of enlarging people’s choices “ said choices being allowing them to “ lead a long & healthy life, to be educated, to enjoy a decent standard of living “ as well as “ political freedom, other guaranteed human rights & various ingredients of self respect.”
UN human development index ( HDI ) is a standard means of measuring well being. It measures average achievements of a country in three basic dimensions of human development.
    1. A long & healthy life measured by life expectancy at birth
    2. Knowledge as measured by adult literacy rate & combined primary , secondary & tertiary gross enrolment ratio
    3. A decent standard of living as measured by GDP percapita
There are six basic pillars of human development: equity, sustainability, productivity, empowerment, cooperation and security.
    • Equity is the idea of fairness for every person, between men and women; we each have the right to an education and health care.
    • Sustainability is the view that we all have the right to earn a living that can sustain our lives and have access to a more even distribution of goods.
    • Productivity states the full participation of people in the process of income generation. This also means that the government needs more efficient social programs for its people.
    • Empowerment is the freedom of the people to influence development and decisions that affect their lives.
    • Cooperation stipulates participation and belonging to communities and groups as a means of mutual enrichment and a source of social meaning.
    • Security offers people development opportunities freely and safely with confidence that they will not disappear suddenly in the future.

Divergence in economic growth & human development :
Soaring economic activity has depleted resources & generated wealth has been unequally distributed. For example increased crime rates do create economic growth by raising expenditure on security systems but they do not raise living standards. Thus economic growth & human development doesn’t always go hand in hand. Economic growth also created environmental pollution which affected “ long & healthy life “.
Philosopher john stuart mill said that “once decent standards were assured, human efforts should be directed towards social & moral progress & increase of leisure, not the competitive struggle for material wealth”.
Human values help people to stay away from material pursuits & would cause human progress as stuart mill envisaged.
    Human values
The values which are unavoidable & essential element in all important decisions in human arena. They are universal. These values create bonding between people of different nations, religions , caste , class e.t.c . Human values are Truth , Love-caring , Peace , Responsibility , Justice , Respect , Equality etc.
Why human values need to be advocated :
Dalai lama said “whereever i go meeting the public spreading message of human values & harmony is most important thing”. If Human values are more practised by humans then it would lead to more human development.
If people have respect for each other then it would lead to cooperation between different communities & groups & would cause growth of everybody both human & economic.
Equality in education in would give equal oppurtunity for every body for decent standard of living. Equal participation of women in labour force would lead to growth in gdp between 16-60 % by 2025.
Love for humanity would remove the divisions caused by race, religion, sex, place of birth, caste etc. When this barriers are removed economic growth would naturally occur.
Peace would lead to reduced crime rate, less wars & less hatred. This would increase the life expectancy of people. Not only that this would lead to more investments & more economic growth.
Justice would make life fairer for everybody.

Thus practising human values would not only lead to human development but also to economic growth.therefore as said by kailash satyarthi “ economic growth & human development needs to go hand in hand.for that human values needs to be advocated.”

  58. Economic growth and human development need to go hand in hand. Human values need to be advocated.
India’s GDP ranking is 3rd and 6th in nominal and PPP basis respectively. But, UN Human Development Report, 2015 says India is ranked 130th out of 188 countries in 2014. This shows trends of human development and economic growth in India are not showing similar patterns. Even though economic growth and human development are in good, it cannot be said how future will be when human values are lost. It is evident from the increasing crime rates, corruption rates, caste atrocities and other discriminatory practices that human values are essential for future of the society. According to corruption perception index report, 2016 India ranks 79 among 175 countries. This shows how human values are degrading in governance. India is only case among many countries where all three are not going together. So, economic growth, human development and human values all needs to go together in order to have sustained, prosperous and peaceful societies.

During colonial rule of India, the focus was on economic growth. Human development and human values are lost in this process. Low levels of literacy, deaths due to poor sanitation, deepening of divisions in society and exploitation of fellow humans was evident. Such rule eventually resulted in Independence of India. So, it is true that economic growth alone is not sufficient for stable and peaceful societies. Even during post-independence, India was in a situation of ‘TRYST WITH DESTINY’ as said by Jawaharlal Nehru. Focus on economic growth became expediency. Later focus on education and health started increasing. But still there are issues in human development: 74% literacy rate, maternal deaths, child mortality and gender inequalities. Economic growth, human development and human values are inter-linked.

    Economic growth – Human development:
It is difficult to strengthen the educational and health infrastructure without economic resources. So, economic growth is needed. Also, economic growth without human development cannot be sustainable in the long-term as said by Amartya Sen. Amartya Sen has given human capability theory for which he was awarded Nobel prize. Economic growth without human development results in inequalities and poverty. According to latest Oxfam report, richest 1% Indians own 58% of country’s wealth; 57 billionaires in India have the same amount of wealth as the bottom 70%; Just 8 men own same wealth as half the world. Previously, Oxfam reported 1% own more wealth than rest of the world. Such inequalities prevail due to lack of opportunities which are deprived because of lack of human development. So, economic growth and human development need to go hand in hand.

    Role of human values:
If human values are not sustained in the process of economic growth or human development, then future of society will be in grave threat. Earning money by killing others is not only illegal but unethical and immoral. Women cannot be discriminated while focussing economic growth or human development. According McKinsey Global Institute report, if gender equality is achieved then GDP growth can be increased by 60 percent by 2025. Presently women in India contribute only 17 percent of GDP. So, gender equality which is an important human value should be respected. Also other discriminatory practices like manual scavenging by dalits and displacement of tribals cannot be allowed for the sake of economic growth. So, human values are crucial for inclusive growth and inclusive development.

    Other issues and suggestions:
Rural-Urban divide and urbanisation: India’s urban population is going to double in the next 35 years. Urbanisation is mainly linked to economic growth. Focus on human development and human values is less in this phenomenon. It is evident from slums, crimes, pollution and inequalities in urban areas. During this urbanisation, the focus on rural development is getting lost. Due to there can be urban-rural divide which again threatens inclusive development and inclusive growth. So, Smart cities are crucial for sustainable development in urban areas. Along with smart cities, the development of smart villages should go together. This simultaneous activities results in bridging the divide which results in inclusive economic growth and development.

New health issues: Increasing Non-Communicable Diseases(NCDs) like diabetes, High Blood pressure and obesity is a new concern in health sector. This is dietary patterns and working styles. Anti-biotic or Anti-microbial resistance is increasing due to over-consumption and irrational consumption of anti-biotics without doctor’s prescription. According to Lancet journal, 52 percent of disease burden and 60 percent of deaths can be attributed to NCDs. Hidden hunger is another issue due to cereal-centric diet(rice and wheat). This is resulting in malnutrition, stunting, maternal mortality, anaemia and wasting. All these issues can be addressed through proper diet – balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Consumption of anti-biotics only after doctor’s prescription and strengthening rural health infrastructure are crucial for addressing these health issues. Along with these, clean water are sanitation are essential. Health is crucial in human development which influences economic growth.

Economic globalisation and its impacts: Due to economic globalisation, market is playing dominant role than states. In such situations, welfare expenditure is declining which results in poor human development and economic inequalities. So, state’s role is crucial in human development and balanced economic growth particularly in the context of globalisation. Globalisation is also impacting the cultural sphere and some of human values are getting lost in the process of promoting economic growth. So, globalisation should only result in pluralism but not homogenisation of culture. Multi-culturalism and globalisation should go together.

It is not needed to say how education is crucial in promoting economic growth, human development and human values. So, achieving 100 percent literacy rates, promoting skill development and providing employment opportunities are essential for economic growth. Education breaks the vicious cycle of poverty and alleviates other socio-economic issues.

    Way forward:
NITI Aayog’s role in achieving sustainable development goals is the way forward for achieving balanced, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and development. Multi-stakeholder approach involving government, corporate, NGOs and civil society is crucial to balance all the three: economic growth, human development and human values.

In conclusion, Mahatma Gandhi’s talisman and his concepts like BREAD LABOUR and TRUSTEESHIP play an important role in sustaining human values in the society along with economic growth and human development.

Economic Growth And Human Development Need To Go Hand In Hand .Human Values Need To Be Advocated.

Human Development is one important determinant in the process of development and economic growth. On the other hand, human development requires resources, such as for funding, which comes from economic growth.Human development has recently been advanced as the ultimate objective of human activity in place of economic growth. Human development Could Perceived as enlarging people’s choices in a way which enables them to lead longer, healthier and fuller lives,Which is highly plausible. HD of a country lays a imporatnce of c health and education of its people. On the one hand, EG provides the resources to permit sustained improvements in HD.

    Relationship Between EG and HD–
EG and HD could identify that there exists a strong positive relationship in both
directions. To determine the strength of the EG and HD investment rate and income distribution plays a key role but female education is no lesser than playing a significant role. The existence of these chains gives an impetupus rise to the potential for virtuous or detrimental cycles of development with good or bad performance on HD and EG reinforcing each other over time. On the other, improvements in the quality of the labour force are an important contributor to EG. Yet, while this two-way relationship between HD and EG may now be widely accepted. In other words, there is a two-way relationship between human development and economic performance. At the improvement of HD will also benefit in reducing disparities.

    Economic Growth To Human Development–
    GNP
affects human development, particularly through the activities of
households and the government, civil society such as through community
organizations and NGOs as well.Spending on a household income can have a direct contribution to HD such as food, water, education
    and health. Generally,
poor people spend a portion of their income than more wealthy people to
the needs of human development and the considerable contribution of
women in managing household expenses. When
the high poverty level, which due to the low income per capita, or due
to poor distribution of income, household expenditures for human
development needs to be low. The
evidence suggests that economic growth reduces poverty, poverty
reduction varies with the distribution of income and changes. Reduction
of income distribution and poverty through growth is highly dependent
on the process of economic growth, specifically based on job creation
    and increasing rural incomes.

    The
role of government allocation of functions plays a vital role to enhancement in human development through proper functioning public sector expenditure, human development sector, and how
these expenditures are allocated. Perananan allocation of public spending by this government is holding a very important role in human development.
Human Development can become more effective if Lebik Society organisation could succedding in occupy a space in HD and NGO play a role as supporter and complement factors in HD.

    Human Development To Economic Growth–
Human development to economic growth,it is a more healthy
community, well maintained and educated will contribute to sustain
economic growth. The smooth level of human development will affect the economy through well maintained and educated people.
In the long run, health and public education is one of the main factors in
the composition and the growth of output and exports.Education
and good health will encourage greater human capital.

    Improving
human capital, increased productivity, ability to adapt and use
technology in the production and the ability to adapt to changes in
technical capacity and the technology will eventually push the economy
of the country and promote economic growth. Improving
human development also requires a huge investment and also be followed
by distribution of the income distribution so that the investment and
the income distribution will ultimately facilitate the improvement of
    education and health development.
Findings is that the investment for education and health is needed to reduce regional income disparities. , life expectancy (Life
Expectancy), the level of fertility (fertility rate), infant mortality
rate (infant mortality rate), the rate of inflation and also variable regional dummy for regional economic growth. From
the estimates made, obtained findings that the positive effect of
variables on growth is education, life expectancy and infant mortality
    rates.

One important determinant in the process of economic growth is human resources or human capital. On the other hand, human development requires other resources, such as for funding, which comes from economic growth. Thus it can be said that there are actually two-way relationship between human development and economic performance. This has strong sequencing
implications, implying that, while ideally both HD and economic growth
should be jointly promoted, HD should be given priority where a choice
    is necessary.

The existence of an iterative process between the ultimate objective of HD and EG is necessary ie desirable phasing of policy change. Economic and social policy has tended to focus priority on getting the economic fundamentals “right” as a necessary precondition for economic growth, while HD improvement must await such economic growth.Without denial of the importance of economic reforms, emphasizing on HD must be included from the beginning of any reform program. Economic growth itself will not be sustained unless preceded or accompanied by improvements in HD.
    Thus,
In Order to spur economic growth, there should be a overall development
in HD right from the level of education and economic performance.HD and EG has a mutual relationship.

Religion can be both good and bad – it is spirituality that counts.” Critically comment

When in the early part of human history, stone age or the metal age, certain forces of nature that couldn’t be explained like, floods, Earthquakes, sudden deaths etc. people tried to explain it by believing that there is some underlying force of nature which controls it and is stronger and more powerful than everything that can be seen.
Such in-comprehensive forces later came to be seen as respectable authorities and began to be worshiped and later came to be practiced in the form of religion. So, Religion by its very nature is subject to interpretation. And later when science started questioning some aspects of religion cynicism surfaced and gave way to conflicts.
But, there was some basic ingredient of every religion that exists before and today. This was the underlying belief that every human being and for that matter every living being is connected by same intangible element of life. The understanding of that common ingredient or process that is in every sense pure and neutral to what anyone practices is called spirituality.

    Religion: Subject to interpretations
Religion is a very subjective concept of identity and understanding the way in which we can connect to someone. Religion is anything that connects two completely strange souls – it can be love for a sport, like cricket is kind of religion in India, it can be connect via common ancestral or common belief. Overtime Religion has incorporated very specific parts or aspects of our life. The common way in which we conduct ourselves on a daily basis is given a name, a standard and an identity, for example if someone says – I’m a Hindu or I’m a Muslim, much can be drawn about what he or she would be like based on prejudices and history that lies before us. Whether it is right to make such interpretation about someone only based on his religious identity is dependent on the understanding of the person.
Religion has undoubtedly provided people with reasons, however hypothetical, to come to terms with forces of nature and give them a solace. It also provides them with confidence in the form of identity and recognition. Much of the religious practices were documented which gave them a constitutional status for a certain section who believed in it and thus like any constitution affected most part of their lives. This was good in a sense that it took away the element of uncertainty in conduct and gave directions on what must be done and how the life must be lived.
Problems erupted when certain people became authority on what can be called as right and wrong on the religious fabric. This took away the element of extended deliberations and discussions, confining it to very small part of the society who became the interpreters of religious documents. This problem is also seen today in the form of radicalization in the name of religion, orthodoxy, social evils which in time breeds hatred, bigotry and superstitions. When religion becomes stagnant and refuses to evolve with time it creates gap because human minds cannot be stopped from evolving and thus breeds differences. This negative aspect of religion is not at the heart of why religion came into existence in the first place. This negativity is the result of identity and existential crisis, conflict with reason and logic. But what must not be forgotten is that dust can settle on any object if it doesn’t move for a long time and therefore as history suggests religious cleansing is important as well as inevitable in the light of reforms which are need of time and dust must be taken off

Spirituality – The essence of every religion
As mentioned before spirituality deals with the intangible, underlying common pure element that connects every soul in the universe and not just humans. Spirituality has expressed itself in every religious practice and conveys the same message based on humanism and reason. Whether we may call them Saints of Hinduism, Sufis in Islam, Monks in Buddhism or missionaries in Christianity they spread the same message of common brotherhood and love between the living creations. Jainism goes on to say that there is some degree of consciousness in every object and thus must be respected.
Taking spirituality in Hinduism for example, as it doesn’t matter because they all convey the same message, talks of two way connect – one with the self and second with the others has life is the reflection of soul which is common and pure in all the living beings. A profound statement in Hindu religion is – अहं ब्रम्हास्मी, meaning I’m everything and in everyone. This spiritualism is reflected very profoundly in Buddhism too which talks about eight fold path where stress is given on conducting oneself in right way.
Vedas in Hinduism starts with a very simple phrase which says – मनुर्भव. Which means “Be human”. Stress is given on being humanistic before being anything else i.e. before identifying oneself has Hindu or Muslim or anything for that matter, try to be a Human first. Such message is common to every religion in its spiritual light. Kabir one of the famous saints of Bhakti period equally criticized Hindu and Muslims of their superstitions and social evils. He stressed on common brotherhood of humanity and love which is the most powerful binding force of nature ever existed and will exist in time to come.

Therefore, what must be understood is that religion and for that matter everything that comes out of human mind under some circumstances on one point of time will be definitely challenged in the time that follows because circumstances never stay the same and human mind evolves. On the other hand the message of love and common brotherhood which arrives irrespective of circumstances are universal in their nature and thus always stay as moral and guiding forces of nature. Earth is living example of such symbiosis between species and nature. With time all the species have developed a relation with nature and with each other to live in harmony and peace. Therefore, humanity must strive to become better with time and understand what is fundamental and what is not. Gather knowledge and apply reason to understand nature which is from where it all began and complete the circle.
