1.The way to turn the economy around should not be by making rich people poorer, but making poor people richer. Do you agree?

अर्थव्यवस्था को अच्छा बनाने के लिए अमीर लोगों को गरीब बनाना नहीं, बल्कि गरीब लोगों को अमीर बनाना है। क्या आप सहमत हैं?

2.A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

एक रचनात्मक आदमी दूसरों को हराने की इच्छा से नहीं, बल्कि कुछ करने की इच्छा से प्रेरित है।

    nice try @refueled:disqus
What i think was lacking – comparison between the desire to achieve and desire to beat with adequate examples.
Also you can include more perspective.
    and
the purpose of examples is always to serve as proof to the point you are trying to make in your argument.
What i have learned in these days of practicing answer writing is that – Don’t just put example because you know it. put it there for a reason.
example of Alibaba and Warren buffet should have been articulated in a better way

    keep writing

1st page- it should be egalitarian growth.
    few points
topic is – “THE WAY TO TURN THE ECONOMY AROUND SHOULD NOT BE BY MAKING RICH PEOPLE POORER , BUT MAKING MORE PEOPLE RICHER.DO YOU AGREE?

    1. the topic wants you to take a stand.
    2. In the whole essay i felt there is mention of problems and not much perspective.
    3. you talk about Microsoft CEO in the essay without giving any vbackground
    4. the essay doesn’t follow any defined structure and flow is not present.
    5. Organisation is not visible.. normally essay must start with a introduction, then the thesis of your essay, then u build a narrative and then present perspectives with a closure in the end.
    6. take time to organize your thoughts (20-30 minutes) before you get down to write (40-50 minutes).
    keep writing more and more..

duncker’s candle problem is more about seeing the extent of out of box thinking developed in individual.. its a good example but not and apt one for this essay as this one deals mainly with the comparison between to types of competition (motivated from desire to achieve and desire to beat).
but yeah its good to keep such examples in the lot.. can be used in essay requires to explain creative minds in detail

  11. A very well written essay…….

Pope francis once remarked that Human rights are not only violated by terrorism, repression but also by unfair economic structure that create huge inequality. Inequality has been a way of life for many since centuries impacting each aspect of economy, society, polity but the real repression emanates from economy and the ownership of assets that percolates down to other walk of life -society , polity.

1929 great depression that had great impact on the economy of USA and major part of the world was rooted in unfair economic structure with huge inequality. This economic condition later changed the course of history as Nazi regime, Fascist regime was able to cash in on the condiiton of germany, italy to establish themselves. Their human rights record is The History.

Founder of the Indian democracy were particular about removing the inequality and thus added economic, political, social justice in the preamble to the constitution itself and intorduced Directive principles of State Policy mandating the state to ensure equality of opportunity, status. But 21st century world and India still grapples with lower than potential economic development and inequality.

Lack of double digit economic growth in India, weak global economic turnaround post 2007 crisis is rooted in unequal possession of mode of production ie asset – land, capital. One will thus agree on the need to bring the economy on the path of growth and development by checking the inequality.

There has been a debate if it can be achieved by making rich poorer or poor richer. Having genesis in socialist and capitalist ideas; Socialism persist on former and capitalism on the later. There is a need to examine each approach to achieve the said aim.

There are certain ideas to which all people would agree which involve educating the poor. Education is a liberator and skills associated help an individual to add value to product or service, improving one’s economic condition and indirectly contributing to national and world economy. It result in GDP growth, tax payment growth, increased exports etc

Skilled and educated can contribute immensely to agriculture growth by adopting effective agriculture practices, using improved seeds, better marketing, efficient input use ie fertilizer. Any improvement in agriculture producitivity is bound to turn around india ‘s fortunes. It will help in providing quality food at affordable prices improving health and nutrition in addition to generation of employment in food processing sector.

Improvement of nutrition is essential to improve health aspects in addiiton to improved sanitation, vaccination, better health services. This inturn would prove crucial in reducing health related cost ie out of pocket payment that create huge indebtness among poor. Improved sanitation , waste management would not only improve health but also ensure that the environment we live in is conducive for us to live, work.

Pollution is directly responsible for hindering the achievement of economic potential as polluted water bodies, polluted air , polluted soil cease to exist as resources and start acting as liability. Industries are forced to cease, productivity of land declines , health related ailment all impact poor the most. Ensuring clean environemnt will thus help poor become financially sound.

Any political ideology of socialism or capitalism would thus agree on improving health, education, agriculture, environment to provide better life to poor. But, what they may disagree on is as to how to achieve it.

Independent India was hugely influenced by socialist model due to such leanings of our freedom fighters from Bhagat Singh to Pt Nehru and SC Bose. First and the foremost, Independent india brought land reforms that aimed to ensure that Zamindari system abolised, excess land holdings be uniformy distrubed by means of land ceiling. In order to ensure that poor are made richer, the rich farm owner had to be made poor as land is a zero sum game.

In addiiton to land, as capital is another mode of prepetuating inequality, government of india nationalised many private industries like steel, banking institutions. In the process of ensuring inclusive growth, many rich families had to bear the brunt of nationalisation undermining their fortunes. In the process, banking and PSU contributed immensley to economic growth.

The aim of government to promote democratic ideals of justice was not limited to economic field but it also abolished privy purses of princes bringing them to the brink of poverty and using the saved finances to fund anti-opverty programs

Independent india has focussed immensly on anti-poverty programs funded by direct and indirect taxation. The taxation system in INdia is progressive where government puts more pressure on the rich by means of taxes to fund the welfare of poor. It is achieved by food, fertilizer, fuel subsidy to poor. Government of India’s focus on Black money post demonitization has Prdhan Mantri garib kalyan yojna which is funded from black money deposited by the offenders.

All in all, in words of Shri APJ Abdul kalam that present generation has not seen great war, depression and our main war is on poverty and inequality. Our war thus has to be a positive war by ensuring that poor are empowered by anti-poverty programs, better health, education, more employment opportunity. However in the process it is quite natural that rich may have to bear a burden to empower their less fortunate brethern by means of tax payment, surrendering productive assets for the benefit of the economy as a whole which would ultimately benefit us all including poor and the rich.

Care needs to taken that government employ a mix strategy of persuation, love and mild coercion against the rich. Gramdan and bhoodan movements employed persuasive skill for the objective that was later followed by land ceiling acts. As far as taxes are concerned government had already popularised income disclosure scheme for balck money holders for past many years. Now there is aneed to adopt coercive action against the defaulter so that untaxed money is used for the benefit of the poor and to eventuall y turn around the economy. There seems a bright future as government implements black money act, Money laundering act, Benami property act to coerce the scruplous rich to untighten their pockets for the benefit of the poor and the turnaround of the economy towards a more formal one

Scope for improvement: I think you have given enough examples, just add some more analysis. Global perspective can be used. You can add dimensions like when/where creativity with an aim to beat others proved disastrous(nuclear race, hitler etc.). AND How such an attitude can be developed(education) etc.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

“Imagination leads to creativity, Creativity blossoms thinking, Thinking provides knowledge, Knowledge results in innovation, Innovation makes the Nation great”, said Mr APJ Abdul Kalam in one of his speeches at IIT Delhi. A creative man has great potentials to create, by employing his/her imagination, something novel and provide out-of-box solutions to problems. The desire is then a fuel to the person and creativity is driven by a ‘positive’ desire, to accomplish something by overcoming limitations of oneself and not by ‘negative’ desires of overtaking other people’s shortcomings. Dr CV Raman, while travelling to Europe, was curious to notice the blue colour of glaciers and seas and the creativity of the scientist manifested itself into the discovery of Scattering of light. He was encouraged by his desire to seek answers to his questions and not to win a Nobel Prize by beating others, which he incidentally did win in 1930, for this breakthrough discovery in Physics.

Positive desires are what produce ‘Pioneers’ in various fields. A pioneer is the one who is the first person to do or achieve something in his field. eg Wright brothers broke the limitations of imagination with their invention of the aeroplane, Gautam Buddha established a religion based on peace and ahimsa at a time when violence was a norm. Had their motivations been driven by a desire to beat others, how could have they created what they did, as there was no ‘other’. It was the creativity and prudence of JawaharLalNehru to pursue a policy of Non-Alignment when the whole world was being divided into 2 halves. The positive desires which empower such people come from the knowledge they possess. It thus becomes imperative to provide the right kind of education to nurture creativity.

Education is the development of wisdom in individuals, self-defeating rat-racing is the antithesis of that. Unfortunately, education today has become more like the latter. The very end is to top the examination by any means whatsoever. Understanding and internalising lessons have taken a back-seat. The common saying in North India, “Padhoge toh banoge nawab, kheloge toh banoge kharab”(study and you become a noble man, play and you spoil yourself) possibly summarises it all. The situation can be improved by stressing more on learning than rote-learning and giving equal importance to sports. Finland model is quintessential of such an education system. Sachin Tendulkar, arguably India’s best cricketer, always believed that records are meant to be broken and one should compete only with oneself, not others. A desire to achieve should thus drive creativity. Right education early in childhood will help promote healthy competition later in adulthood.

Anti-competitive practices like collusion, that limit or prevent competition are on the rise. Innovative start-ups try to find their way into the market but are overpowered by market giants. The unhealthy competition in market place nips any creativity in the bud. It also becomes a cause of collusive corruption and embezzlement. Many big pharma companies aim only to make earnings out of their ‘Intellectual Property'(patents), discourage any attempt to make generic drugs, and thus remain ignorant of the human needs. But can such inventions associated with narrow-mindedness be called creativity is the question.

The ramifications of creating something with the wrong motive of beating others are visible both in history and contemporary times. The industrial revolution, which was the period marked by the epitome of innovation with the aim to invent or discover something novel, later became a cause of an imperialist race leading to 2 world wars and also bringing the world to the brink of extinction by nuclear weapons. Creation of nuclear weapons and the subsequent race for its possession is another example. The attitude of superiority over others, of race, of religion, made the world see holocaust under Hitler’s nazism, and also witness the rise of religious fundamentalism in the present times. Today, the aim of “creating” an Islamic world has led ISIS to inhuman deeds. Terrorism itself has become a competitive industry.

Today the world faces some serious global problems, which to be solved, require cooperation and not unhealthy competition. The looming crisis of climate change needs to be dealt with individuals presenting innovative solutions to the problems of fossil fuel consumption, vehicle emission, air pollution and so on. Research and development cannot be successful with huge supporting infrastructure unless creativity of individuals cooperating in their respective researches, is promoted. Innovation needs to be promoted in the areas of among others, agriculture, space science and health. ISRO is one of the best examples of an institution which aims at problem-solving of the country and not compete with other space agencies of the world. This dedication has made it one of the most successful institutions, with the missions like MOM, Chandrayaan, NAVIC, and the recent launching of 104 satellites simultaneously. These achievements have not only bolstered the self-esteem of India but have also brought her self-sufficiency.

Moreover, development today has to be based on gender parity. The attitude of men defeating women or vice-versa should be left behind. The patriarchal society should not be afraid of women coming forward and achieving big. The half population must be given parity, if not priority, in proving their creativity. The cut-throat competition has resulted in an unequal world. The recent Oxfam research suggests 8 richest individuals own almost half of the world’s wealth. The motivation behind creativity should thus be to “leave no one behind” and not “leave everyone behind”.

A creative man should thus be motivated by a desire to achieve, to achieve a more educated, more healthy, more innovative, more safe and secure, more gender-sensitive and a more inclusive world. India in 2020 was a vision of a man who redefined creativity with his talent, capabilities along with his humbleness, empathy and concern for others, Mr APJ Abdul Kalam. The man is no more, but the vision and the legacy are intact for crores of ‘Creative Indians’ to follow.

  46. “THE WAY TO TURN THE ECONOMY AROUND SHOULD NOT BE BY MAKING RICH PEOPLE POORER , BUT MAKING MORE PEOPLE RICHER.DO YOU AGREE?

The world today is suffering from high income inequality .Some live in big banglows ,travel in expensive vehicles and some even struggle to have even two meals a day, even die of hunger .In USA around 90% wealth is owned by 1% rich. Then the question arises can the economy be turned by making rich people poorer and making poorer people richer?.
Rising inequalities have made the people around the world to think ways to solve the problem.
Govt has introduced progressive taxation which taxes the rich and does not tax poor and the benefits of taxes is transferred to the poor people. most of the countries have introduced this kind of taxation.Which is thought as a good way to redistribute wealth.

But taxing the rich and transferring the benfiets or taking some of money of rich and transferring it to the poor will not solve the problem. There answer does not lie in transfering the money of rich to the poor.Even if it is thought money from rich is transfered from rich to poor but the problem here lies that there is not a single men who is poor there are millions of poor, and would that money be sufficient to make them rich. Gandhiji had long ago cherished in the concept of ramrajya in which he wanted to see an India where there is no poor , no beggar, everyone is prosperous to care of his needs.

The economy can be turned only by providing oppertunites to all in which everybody can rise and no one is left behind. The talent of the youth is recognised and his talent is channalised which can contribute to his own country and nation. More research in science and technology.Women are provided equal oppertunities as men.
Some countries around the world have even thought of introducing basic income to deal with the problem of poverty. Providing some form of basic income or simply transferring income may make people unwilling to work as they would be transferred money which is going to affect economy badly in the longer run .The country”s productivity may suffer and which is not good for the health of economy.

Govt needs to liberate people from poverty by providing oppertunites . Schemes like SETU ,USTAAD etc are a good step . skill india program which prvides skills to youth and makes him employable in the right direction. World would progress only if the job seekers would become job provider. We can help once a poor by providing him money but not for lifetime. He can become rich only when he has his own source of income he cannot become rich with the wealth of other.

Such a world is created which is conducive to the need of both poor and rich only then the concept of Ramrajya can become a truth.

  47. Poverty indicates lack of access to basic goods like food, water, shelter, education, health, sanitation and others. According to World Bank data for 2013, 1 in 10 people(10.7%) in the world live under $1.90 a day, and half of the extreme poor live in Sub-Saharan Africa; 30 per cent of the world’s poorest children live in India; 21.2 % of India’s population is poor. According to Oxfam, richest 1% Indians own 58% of country’s wealth; 57 billionaires in India have the same amount of wealth as the bottom 70%; Just 8 men own same wealth as half the world. Previously, Oxfam reported 1% own more wealth than rest of the world.

So, what these statistic say? There is extreme inequality and significant poverty levels in World as well as in India. In this context, it is essential to make the poor people richer to promote inclusive and sustainable growth and development of the economy. According to liberal economic theory, economy works well when left alone. But, when there is no role of state or voluntary involvement of rich, then this extreme inequality and poverty become permanent in economy. Such state of affairs leads to unrest, deprivation and distress among the majority of the population in the long-term. So, there needs to be redistribution of resources such that equity is promoted. Taxation doesn’t mean making the rich people poorer. The rationality of taxation is ‘equality of opportunities’. So, state can tax the rich people to make poor people relatively richer in order to turn around the economy. The tax proceeds are spent towards provision of basic needs like food, water, education, health and shelter. In this way poor are enabled and empowered to become richer. It is creating level playing field in opportunities.

Historically, there is communist mode of production. This do not lead to extreme inequalities and all live in subsistence. There is also barter system which involves exchange of goods without involvement of money. In such cases, economy is inclusive and sustainable. The rich-poor inequalities started to arise when land and currency were introduced into the economy. The inequalities gradually started increasing due to influence of capitalism particularly during industrial revolution era. Colonialism spread this capitalist tendencies to other countries. For example, Zamindari system in India lead to extreme inequalities and poverty of tenants, sharecroppers and marginal farmers.

According classical liberals, like Adam Smith, there should be absolute freedom to market without intervention of state. But this lead to inequalities and poverty. These socio-economic issues and criticism from Marxist scholars like Karl Marx lead to modification in liberal economic theory by including welfare provision and positive role of state. This again lead to fiscal deficit issues and thought unsustainable in long-terms. Neo-liberal scholars like Hayek, Friedman called for unregulated market, free trade, reduced taxes and reduction of poverty. Sociological liberal scholars like Amartya Sen talks about human capability theory – To empower people with education, health and basic resources. So, all these are different perspectives on whether rich should be made poorer or poor should be made richer. Among these, sustainable approach can be Amartya Sen’s theory.

Making poor people richer should not be in economic terms alone. Poor people must be made richer in social, political and psychological terms. There should be representation of all sections in the polity. There should good literacy levels and good health indicators. There should be no social discrimination and social inequalities. People’s behavioral changes are also needed. It is easy to construct a toilet and give to a poor person. But what if the person don’t use because he still likes to open defecate. So, behavioral changes are also needed to make poor richer.

    Issues/Challenges and Suggestions:

It is also unsustainable and irrational to provide freebies for life-long. Poor should be empowered through educational and employment opportunities so that he no longer depends on state for getting freebies. So, it is important to make poor people richer rather than rich people poorer. In this context reservations cannot be permanent they should be only for enabling. The people who are benefiting from the reservations should give up so that the more poor sections get benefited.

Continuous freebies also burden on fiscal policy of a state. So, freebies should be given with outcome orientations. For example, irrational use of fertilizers, water and power in agriculture sector shows why subsidies should be backed by proper implementation.

Majority of poor in India lives in rural areas. So, proper targeting is needed. There should be focussed approach, pilot projects and technological interventions like JAM.

Gender dimension needs to be considered while making the poor richer. Gender inequality is also a major issue. For example, share of women in India’s GDP is only 17 percent. According to McKinsey Global Institute Report, gender equality and more women in workforce leads to India’s GDP growth by 60% by 2025. So, gender budgeting is the appropriate solution.

Climate change and environmental degradation cannot be stopped if there is no regulation on economic activities. For example, the rise in global temperatures was due to industrial revolution. So, economic growth should be sustainable also.

Economic globalisation is another challenge. Due to this phenomenon, there is international competition of economies at national level. This is leading relaxation of labour norms and reduction in public expenditure. In such context, making poor people richer becomes a challenging task. So, state should not dispense with its social objectives. State capitalism is an appropriate solution. Here, state plays an crucial in economic sphere along with economic liberalism.

Regional inequalities is also an issue: This is evident from Green Revolution in India. So, while promoting economic growth, it is necessary to ensure that it is inclusive. In India, the development of North-East is less compared to rest of India. Such inequalities lead to secessionist tendencies.

    Way forward:

India is one of the fastest growing nations of the world. It has favorable demographic divided compared to developed countries in the world. By promoting equal opportunities, progressive taxation policies and good governance, India will be a developed nation and can take top spot in the economic rankings. India is fore front in achieving the SDG-1(No Poverty) and SDG-5(Gender equality). The role of NITI Aayog, dynamic leadership and efficient bureaucracy aids these developments.

In conclusion, Mahatma Gandhi’s Talisman aids the all those involved in governance to make the poor richer without disturbing the economic freedom of rich.

A Creative man is motivated by desire to achieve, not by desire to beat others

“Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.” -Leo Burnett

Human mind is different from other species because it has an inherent desire and capacity to know about things, the inquisitiveness drives the man to think out of the box and this also becomes the source of motivation for him. On the other hand, desire to be better than somebody else is a human construct, which has come to life when true creativity is replaced by desire to beat someone.
But there is a catch here, the desire to improve upon the idea of others is also a form of creativity and should not be taken as something negative, but when this is replaced by narrow vision of beating some specific person, creativity takes a backseat. Such efforts breed hatred, poisons relationship and slows down the pace of human growth.

Understanding a creative mind and its owner:
Creativity is like that bird in the sky which knows no limits and is bounded like the one who is in the cage. Creativity spans in an endless canvas and therefore is able to give birth to something that is entirely a priceless gift to one and all. In the present world there is no dearth of such people who are guided by such mind which is driven by desire to change the word for the good. These people are always motivated and are never bogged down by challenges that come in front of them because they know that challenges and obstacles are the raw material from which the road to the city of “Eureka” is paved.
A creative mind likes to challenge the status quo and not chase some individual to be better than him because such pursuit is endless and by its very nature hollow and never complete. If we look at the example of Elon Musk, one of the most creative minds of 21st century and owner of Space-X and Tesla motors, has changed the way we look at communication and space tech. He failed three times back to back in his effort to make a space launch vehicle that would come back to the surface after payload delivery. Had he been driven by the idea of beating others we would not have a system that brought down the cost of launching satellite by almost 80%.

Desire to beat others – an endless pursuit of satisfying ego:
We all know about the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilber) who were guided by the pursuit of changing the paradigm by creating this flying object. But we have never heard of Samuel Pierpont Langley, who belongs to the same period as wright brothers and was also guided by same desire to innovate this flying machine which was nothing less than the dot com of that time. He had the best resources, best minds with him and all the media followed him. But he was not successful and this can be understood from his behavior, because as soon as he got to know that wright brothers have made this flying machine, he quit. He could have welcomed the innovation and should have improved upon the prototype of wright brothers.

The Fundamental difference and example from India
A creative mind and the mind that desires to beat others are fundamentally different in the way they operate. On one hand where the creative person is looking towards providing better understanding and solutions to the problems that come in the way of human progress, the person who is guided by desire to beat someone has poisoned vision and lacks the big picture view, always remains occupied with narrow gains.
The present political situation in India can be a best example to understand this – leaders these days are not motivated by a desire to solve the problems of their community and people they represent but instead are occupied in engineering tricks to defeat their political opponents. It is not surprising that merit has become the secondary criteria for political leadership. In the same country we had leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Lad Bahadur Shastri, B. R. Ambedkar, and many others who challenged the evils and not the people. Their vision was motivated by desire to achieve a society that is just and peaceful.
Where a creative mind inspires others to become great and be a leader of change, a mind that desires to beat others breeds unhealthy competition, fear and depression. It also leads to corruption of souls which breeds crime and spreads hatred.

Supreme Court of India has time again showed the best use of creativity in Socio-political turf by judicial creativity. Judgments that gave the concept of “Basic structure of constitution”, interpretation of A-21, “Right to life”, Public interest litigation to expand its view is the genius of SC benches that is guided by desire to achieve a better society that evolved with time and not clouded by narrow vision to beat someone by narrow interpretations. Judiciary forging new tools, devising new strategies to make fundamental rights more meaningful for the masses is an example of creativity and vision to achieve a better society.
Another great example is of ISRO, who has defined the meaning of creativity many times before the world and served the nation in various capacities. Such feat of innovation and creativity is because of the inspiring leadership and environment of ISRO which is not reflected as competition to beat someone else but itself.

In conclusion it can be said that a creative minds knows no boundary, feeds on creative ideas and sleeps on bed made of challenges. Creative man is the one take can spark breakthroughs and walk an untraveled path. A healthy competition is part of being creative where ideas are challenged and not the person who owns them. Such competition can improve the pace of achieving the goals. But the competition to beat some person is just not how creative hunger can be satisfied, it will inflate the ego is one wins or will sink him in depression if he loses, either way it is not healthy for him and the world.
