Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems or E cigarettes

E cigarettes are the electronic devices that do not contain tobacco, unlike traditional cigarettes. Instead they contain liquid nicotine that vaporizes to produce mist or vapours that users inhale inorder to deliver nicotine to their lungs.
    Need to regulate their sale
    1. While E cigarettes are emerging as an alternative for those who want to quit smoking, the threats posed by them and by nicotine addiction is still unclear.
    2. There are cases of explosion of the E Cigarette devices and accidental consumption of the liquid inside resulting in sudden death.
    3. Since they do not contain tobacco, they do not come under the ambit of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of advertisement and regulation of trade and Commerce, production, supply and distribution) Act, 2003. Hence, they do not contain health warnings on the packages.
    4. They are easily accessible through e commerce websites. Moreover, these websites don’t display proper health warnings on the product description, thus buyers assume it to be a safe alternative to cigarettes.
    The Way Forward
    1. E cigarettes neither classify as cigarettes nor as drug delivery devices. So, the most important step should be for the government to come up with the proper regulatory mechanism which would regulate their sales.
    2. Mechanism should be devised to make it compulsory for displaying warning on their packages and on their description on E-Commerce websites.
    3. Scientific research should be done to know the benefits and threats posed by e-cigarettes.
