Observation:

There is a huge jump in cutoff marks. Cutoffs have gone up in each stage of the exam.
Interview score can make a huge difference in your ranking or selection. For Example, Rank 432 (Interview Score: 143) would have got a Rank of 34 had the interview score been 203.
Gopalkrishna Ronanki has scored the highest marks in written: 936.

I just can’t understand what is going on with UPSC.May be now they have started giving more marks in mains per question. But the vast difference in interview is a very crucial factor.Again it depends on board.Several boards are notorious to give less marks.And btw,has UPSC stopped scaling or what ?? Someone with mechanical engineering optional has got whooping 345 marks in optional (http://discuss.forumias.com/uploads/editor/t9/ckjuqgqxzyl0.png).
How a person with literature or pub ad can compete with him??
