Source- This post on the Alderman has been created based on the article “May pronounce verdict on Delhi govt’s plea against LG’s power to nominate aldermen in MCD: SC” published in “Hindustan Times” on 31 July 2024.

Why in the news?

The Supreme Court of India is about to decide on a case where the Delhi government is challenging the power of the lieutenant governor to appoint aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

What is an Alderman?

1. The word “Alderman” comes from combining “old” and “man,” meaning an experienced or senior person.

2.  Originally, it referred to elders or leaders within a clan or tribe. Over time, it evolved to denote high-ranking officials such as viceroys of a king.

3. By the 12th century, it started referring to municipal officers who had both civil and military duties.

Alderman in India:

1. In India, a municipal body or municipal corporation is made up of elected representatives called Councillors.

2. Councillors can nominate experts from various fields to join the municipal body. These nominated members are called “Aldermen.”

3. Aldermen do not have voting rights in the election of the mayor. However, they can help the municipal body make important public decisions.

4. Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957: According to this law, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi can appoint ten individuals as aldermen. These individuals should be over 25 years old and have expertise in municipal administration.
