Why in news?

The Delhi government is taking proactive measures to prevent air pollution by spraying a bio-decomposer solution over city farmlands. This solution aims to address the issue of stubble burning, a major contributor to air pollution in the region.

About the initiative

1. The bio-decomposer is a microbial liquid developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

2. How it works: It works by breaking down stubble, allowing it to be absorbed into the soil and improving soil fertility.

3. Objective: The bio-decomposer spray is intended to decompose paddy stubble, preventing the need for stubble burning, which significantly contributes to air pollution.

4. Coverage Area: The solution will be sprayed free of cost over 5,000 acres of farmland across Delhi, starting in the last week of September. So far, 841 farmers have registered for the bio-decomposer spraying initiative.

5.Environmental Impact: Stubble burning, slow wind speeds, and the bursting of firecrackers contribute to the annual spike in air pollution in Delhi and the larger Indo-Gangetic plains during winter.

The bio-decomposer initiative is part of Delhi’s efforts to curb this seasonal air pollution and promote sustainable farming practices.

About the bio-decomposer

Aspects Description
AboutIt is a biological solution made of microbial cultures designed to decompose agricultural crop residues, especially stubble.
Features1. Microbial Composition: It contains beneficial microorganisms that help break down organic matter.
2. Eco-friendly: It offers an environmentally safe alternative to burning crop residues.
3. Easy Application: It can be sprayed directly onto the crop residue for effective decomposition.
Benefits1. Soil Health: It enhances soil organic carbon and overall fertility.
2. Nutrient Recycling: It converts crop residues into simpler compounds, improving nutrient availability for the next crop cycle.
3. Reduces Pollution: It helps to prevent harmful practices like stubble burning, which contributes to air pollution.
4. Cost-effective: It minimizes the need for chemical fertilizers by enriching the soil naturally.
5. Zero-waste Agriculture: It supports the practice of zero-waste farming by managing agricultural waste efficiently.
6. Enhances Organic Farming: It promotes organic farming practices by enriching soil naturally without harmful chemicals.
