Why in the news?

Recently, the Government of India has mandated conformity to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for stainless steel and aluminum utensils.

About the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) standard for Utensils

1. The Government of India has made it mandatory for stainless steel and aluminum utensils to conform to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

2. This mandate aims to enhance kitchen safety, quality, and efficiency.

3. The Quality Control Order was issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on March 14, 2024.

4. The ISI mark is now compulsory for these utensils, and non-compliance is punishable.

About BIS Standards for Kitchen Items

1. The BIS has developed various standards to ensure kitchen utensils meet high quality and safety benchmarks.

2. These standards promote superior product performance and consumer safety while upholding cultural diversity in culinary practices.

3. Mandatory Certification:

i) Stainless steel and aluminum utensils must have BIS certification.

ii) No one can manufacture, import, sell, distribute, store, hire, lease, or exhibit for sale any utensils that do not meet BIS standards and bear the BIS Standard Mark.

iii)  Violations are subject to legal penalties.

4. Significance:

i)  The BIS standards ensure kitchenware used in homes and professional settings meets the highest safety and quality criteria.

ii)  Rigorous testing and certification processes protect consumers from substandard products.

iii) The BIS Standard Mark helps consumers make informed choices, fostering a culture of excellence and safety in kitchenware.

About BIS Standards for Stainless Steel (IS 14756:2022)

i)  Ensures the materials used are safe.

ii)  Ensures utensils are designed to be practical and uniform.

iii)  Requires high-quality craftsmanship and a nice appearance.

iv)  Includes various tests like staining test, mechanical shock test, thermal shock test, dry heat test, coating thickness test, Nominal capacity test, flame stability test, and specific tests for utensils with tempered glass lids

About BIS Standards for Aluminium (IS 1660:2024)

i) Covers utensils up to 30 liters in capacity, including hard anodized and non-stick types.

ii) Ensures overall quality and thickness of materials.

iii) Uses proper grades as per IS 21 for wrought and IS 617 for cast utensils.

iv)  Details the shapes, dimensions, and craftsmanship required.

v) Includes tests to ensure durability and safety, such as for aluminum lunch boxes.
