Context– On Independence Day, the Prime Minister addressed the nation from the Red Fort, unveiling a vision for a self-sufficient and modern India, rooted in the nationalist ideals that inspired the country’s freedom struggle.

What were the key highlights of the Prime Minister’s speech?

1) Transformative Changes in Governance– The Prime Minister emphasized a move from depending on the state to a proactive approach, where the government actively ensures that everyone’s basic needs are met.

2) Disruption of the Politics of Unfreedom- The government’s use of technology, like Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), has made welfare schemes more accessible and fairer. This approach has empowered marginalized communities, including the poor and Dalits, helping millions out of poverty and boosting trust in the democratic system.

3) Economic Reforms and Their Impact- India’s youth have more economic freedom, and businesses face fewer restrictions. Despite global economic challenges, India’s economy remains strong and resilient.

4) Changing Attitudes and Ambitions– India’s youth have become more confident and ambitious, aiming for bold goals rather than small changes. The focus has shifted from socialist views to valuing wealth creators and job providers, with a new emphasis on IPOs, venture capital, and angel investors.

5) Infrastructure and Technological Advancements -Improvements in infrastructure are set to boost living standards and opportunities, especially in neglected areas like the Northeast. India’s leadership in digital infrastructure has greatly enhanced financial inclusion, access to services, and education.

6) Focus on Emerging Technologies and Sustainability- The speech focused on key future areas like semiconductors, green jobs, the Green Hydrogen Mission, and climate change. While these may not bring immediate political gains, they are vital for India’s long-term progress.

7) Uniform Civil Code and One Nation, One Election- The PM stressed the need for a Uniform Civil Code and One Nation, One Election (ONOE) to address discriminatory laws and frequent elections that affect governance. ONOE aims to simplify the political process and enhance efficiency.

8) Civilisational Pride and Future Aspirations- The Prime Minister’s speech celebrated India’s history, called for a revival of its ancient spirit, and aimed to make India a space leader. He mixed traditional values with modern progress and encouraged young people to get involved in politics for positive change.
