International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure to begin tomorrow

  1. The 2nd International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (IWDRI) will be inaugurated on 19th March 2019 in India. The workshop is organised by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and in partnership with the Global Commission on Adaptation, United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank
  2. In January 2018, India had hosted the first International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (IWDRI, 2018)
  3. UNIDSR serve as the focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of disaster reduction and to ensure coordination among the disaster reduction activities. It is an organisational unit of the UN Secretariat and is led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG).
  4. The IWDRI 2019 seeks to a) identify good practices of disaster risk management in key infrastructure sectors, b) identify specific areas and pathways for collaborative research on disaster resilient infrastructure in the areas of Transport, Energy, Telecom and Water, c) discuss and co-create the broad contours of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and d) create common platform to collaborate on areas of common interest and make specific commitments.
  5. At the Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR), 2016 India had advocated for a coalition for promoting disaster resilient infrastructure. A task force was constituted by the Home Ministry which in 2018 had submitted its report on “Establishing a Coalition on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)”.
  6. The AMCDRR is a biennial conference jointly organized by different Asian countries and the UNISDR. At AMCDRR 2016, ‘New Delhi Declaration’ and the ‘Asian Regional Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework’ were adopted. New Delhi Declaration is a political statement which spells out the commitment of participating governments towards preventing and reducing disaster risk, and strengthening the resilience of communities, nations in the Asian region.
  7. The Sendai Framework is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding agreement on disaster risk reduction. It was adopted in 2015 at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It is the successor instrument to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters.
