Karnataka’s plea on Cauvery rejected

Cauvery water dispute

News:

  1. The Supreme Court on 16th May, 2018 refused Karnataka’s repeated pleas to pause the Cauvery management scheme, framed by the Center, till July’2018.

Important facts:

2. Reason behind Karnataka’s plea:

  • Formation of new government is still going on and
  • The state wants to give suggestions on the draft scheme like the other States.

3. The plea has been refuted because the court cannot wait till July as the first release of water from Cauvery is scheduled in June.

4. Instead, the Supreme Court wants the Centre to incorporate the changes into the draft scheme within the next 24 hours.

5. One of the primary changes is the provision in the draft scheme which makes the decision of the Centre “binding”.

6. The second change is the provision which directs the Cauvery authority to comply with any and all directions given to it by the Centre from time to time.

7. In addition, the Supreme Court headquarters of the Cauvery authority should be in New Delhi.

8. The Supreme Court also has rejected Tamil Nadu’s suggestion that the chairman of the Cauvery authority should be an “independent person” like a retired judge.
