News: Prime Minster Narendra Modi will launch a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the 150th birth anniversary of tribal icon and freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
1. Birsa Munda was an iconic Indian tribal freedom fighter, religious leader, folk hero who played a key role in Indian Independence Movement.
2. He belonged to the Munda tribe and is also referred to as ‘Bhagwan’ and ‘Dharti Aaba’.
3. He spearheaded the ‘Ulgulan Movement’ (The Great Tumult) against the land alienation, forced labour and illegal appropriation of tribal land by British and non-tribals settlers in the Chotanagpur Plateau region of India.
4. He founded the faith of Birsait, emphasising on the importance of prayer, worship of God, staying away from alcohol.
5. In 2021, the central government decided to celebrate November 15, the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas every year.
