News: The government plans to more than double the staffing at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). The aim is to strengthen enforcement of good manufacturing practices for medicines, vaccines and medical devices.
1. Central Drugs Standards Control Organisation is the National Regulatory Authority (NRA) for drugs and medical devices in India.
2. CDSCO is entrusted with the responsibility of regulating the manufacture, sale, distribution, and import of drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices in India under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and its rules.
3. It is also responsible for approval of new drugs and clinical trials, granting licenses to drug manufacturing units, monitoring drug safety, regulating biopharmaceuticals, coordinating the activities of state drug control organisations etc.
4. CDSCO is headed by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).
5. It functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
6. It is headquartered in New Delhi.
