- The most important agency involved in the collection of labour statistics in India is the Ministry of Labour and Employment, through Labour Bureau and offices like the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGE&T), Directorate General of Labour Welfare (DGLW) and Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI)
- The Ministry collects data on various dimensions of labour on the basis of periodical administrative reports and returns on labour laws that it administers and implements.
- It also collects data through a number of regular, periodic and ad-hoc surveys.
- Another important source is the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation which collects, compiles and publishes data through its two important offices, the Central Statistical Office (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
- The Census of India also data on labour force and workforce once in every ten years.
- The State governments also collect data on labour through labour departments.
