South Korea Ranks No. 1 in Innovation Index
Important Facts:
- The Bloomberg Innovation Index is an annual ranking of how innovative countries are.
- The 2019 index is compiled by analyzing seven equally weighted categories, including research and development spending, patent activity, manufacturing capability and concentration of high-tech public companies, post-secondary education and research personnel.
- Bloomberg uses data from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the OECD and UNESCO to compile the ranking
- US, Japan and France came in at eight, ninth and tenth.
- The US rose three spots in the 2019 ranking, after it fell out of the top 10 economies for the first time in 2018
- Vietnam was ranked last with a score of 45.92, preceded by Mexico, with a score of 46.
- Startup Nation leaps up five places in 2019 ranking of most innovative countries.

- It is published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization, in partnership with other organisations and institutions
- The Global Innovation Index (GII) provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 126 countries which represent 90.8% of the world’s population and 96.3% of global GDP
- Its 80 indicators explore a broad vision of innovation, including political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.
- The GII is commonly used by corporate and government officials to compare countries by their level of innovation
