Every year UPSC releases\u00a0its notification for\u00a0UPSC IAS exam,\u00a0with\u00a0detailed information regarding the eligibility for IAS and\u00a0IAS qualification. It is\u00a0necessary\u00a0for every student that before filling the UPSC IAS application for, they should go through the detailed notification\u00a0given by UPSC and clear their doubt regarding the eligibility for UPSC.<\/p>\n<p>Some students in spite of being eligible for UPSC IAS exam do not fill the form and miss the\u00a0opportunity at the very first instance. Hence, knowing about the IAS qualification and\u00a0eligibility for IAS is the first and foremost task of the students.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u00a0will\u00a0discuss in simple\u00a0language about the eligibility criterion for UPSC.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><b>Eligibility criterion for UPSC<\/b><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Eligibility for IAS exam<strong><b>\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>depend upon any one factors or criterion.\u00a0A student or aspirant will have to qualify for all types of given eligibilities. For\u00a0example,\u00a0if an aspirant is eligible\u00a0as per age limit but not as per IAS exam qualification, is not eligible. Similarly, if an aspirant has attempts left with him but his age\u00a0has crossed the upper limit, is not eligible to take exam.<\/p>\n<p>There are four basic\u00a0criterions that decide regarding the\u00a0eligibility for\u00a0IAS\u00a0in details:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nationality<\/li>\n<li>Age limit<\/li>\n<li>Attempts limit<\/li>\n<li>Educational qualifications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Overall eligibility criterion for UPSC in simple terms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Nationality<\/td>\n<td>Indian citizens only<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Age limit<\/td>\n<td>21 to 32 years- for general category<\/p>\n<p>21 to 35\u00a0years\u00a0for OBC category<\/p>\n<p>21 to 37 years for ST\/SC category<\/p>\n<p>21 to 40 years for Physically handicapped<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Attempts limit<\/td>\n<td>6 for general, 9 for OBC, unlimited for ST\/SC and<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Minimum\u00a0Educational qualification<\/td>\n<td>Graduation<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong><b>Nationality:\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>For All India Services (<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ifs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indian Administrative Service<\/a>, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign\u00a0Service):<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0The candidate should be Citizen of India only.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>For\u00a0Other\u00a0Central Services:\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>citizen of India, or<\/li>\n<li>subject of Nepal, or<\/li>\n<li>subject of Bhutan, or<\/li>\n<li>Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or<\/li>\n<li>person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However,\u00a0a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) shall\u00a0have\u00a0a certificate of eligibility, issued\u00a0by the Government of India.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Age limit:<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the overall criterion of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/number-of-attempts-for-upsc-ias-and-age-limit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eligibility for UPSC, the age limit<\/a> criterion is very important.\u00a0Candidates\u00a0need\u00a0to carefully go through this criterion before filling the form. Otherwise, if any discrepancies will be found, then\u00a0UPSC will cancel the candidature of the applicant.<\/p>\n<p>For appearing in UPSC a student must have attained 21 years of age. UPSC releases cut-off date for counting the upper and lower limit. For example, it is 2nd August 1989 for UPSC 2021. General category students have least number of attempts for UPSC\u00a0exam;\u00a0however,\u00a0it is also the most no. Of attempts that 90% of UPSC aspirants\u00a0take.\u00a0Very few aspirants attempt this exam more than 6 time.<\/p>\n<p>An aspirant starting in an early age is in advantage compared to the ones starting late. It is because, former has a scope for taking\u00a0break in between attempt and in case of any hinderance in preparation she\/he can think of taking attempt next year. Students from different educational backgrounds prepare for this exam and fill the application\u00a0form\u00a0for the same.\u00a0There is no restriction on student of any subject matter.<\/p>\n<p>The basic criterion which is applicable for all stream students are that everyone should be graduate. UPSC IAS\u00a0exam\u00a0is known for its equal level playing for all. It is simply shown\u00a0in its minimum marks required to appear for the exam is just 33%. It does not ask for toppers and\u00a0extraordinary\u00a0students. It simply wants integral, impartial and honest civil servants for the society.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><b>Following are the minimum educational qualifications for UPSC IAS exam:<\/b><\/strong><strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>The candidate must\u00a0<strong><b>hold a degree from Government\u00a0recognised\u00a0Universities<\/b><\/strong>or possess an equivalent qualification.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates\u00a0<strong><b>who are in their final year\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>or awaiting results are also eligible to appear for UPSC preliminary Examination.\u00a0However, they must produce the proof of passing the exam before\u00a0appearing\u00a0for IAS\u00a0mains exam.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates having\u00a0<strong><b>professional and technical qualifications<\/b><\/strong>recognized\u00a0by the Government as\u00a0<strong><b>equivalent to professional and technical degrees.<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Medical students\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>who have passed the final year of MBBS, but are yet to complete their internship also have eligibility for IAS. Although, along with the Main Examination application, a certificate of course completion (including internship) from the concerned authority of the University\/Institution has to be submitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this article we have discussed about the eligibility for UPSC and IAS qualification in simple manner.\u00a0It is expected from the students that, they go through all the eligibility for IAS\u00a0carefully\u00a0before filling the form.
