It governs the common economic, social and security policies of its member states.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It operates an internal (or single) market that allows free movement of goods, capital, services and people between member states.<\/li>\n<li>The 19 EU countries use EURO as their official currency. But eight EU members namely Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden do not use the euro.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Origin of the European Union:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite\u00a0<strong>not being officially formed until 1993,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the European Union\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0foundations actually reach further back to\u00a0<strong>1957<\/strong>, when\u00a0<strong>the European Economic Community was established.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The EEC was formed out of a previous group called\u00a0<strong>the European Coal and Steel Community \u2013 which had its own start in 1951.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In 1993, the <strong>EEC morphed into the European Union<\/strong> following\u00a0<strong>the new Maastricht Treaty<\/strong>\u00a0(also known as the Treaty on European Union).<\/li>\n<li>Additionally,\u00a0<strong>the Treaty of Lisbon,<\/strong>\u00a0enacted in 2009, gave the <strong>European Union more broad powers<\/strong> that included being authorized to sign international treaties, increase border patrol, and other security and enforcement provisions.<\/li>\n<li>The EU covers the following three organisations with common membership:\n<ul>\n<li>European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), formed in 1951.<\/li>\n<li>European Economic Community (EEC) or European Common Market (ECM) formed in 1957.<\/li>\n<li>European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM), formed in 1958.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Union is an international organization that now consists of 27 European countries.
