{"id":118182,"date":"2021-07-12T18:32:13","date_gmt":"2021-07-12T13:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?page_id=118182"},"modified":"2021-07-12T18:32:13","modified_gmt":"2021-07-12T13:02:13","slug":"history-of-co-operatives-in-india","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/history-of-co-operatives-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"History of Co-operatives in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>History of Cooperatives in India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The history of cooperative societies dates back to the <strong>pre-Independence era<\/strong>, in response to the agrarian distress and overall indebtedness.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The term Cooperative Societies came into existence when the<strong>\u00a0farmers of Pune and Ahmednagar (Maharashtra)<\/strong> spearheaded an agitation against the money lenders who were charging exorbitant rates of interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pre-independence:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first cooperative society legislation came into existence with the <strong>Cooperative Credit Societies Act, 1904<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0first credit cooperative society was formed in Banking in 1903<\/strong>\u00a0with the support of the Government of Bengal. It was registered under the<strong>\u00a0Friendly Societies Act<\/strong>\u00a0of the British Government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1912<\/strong>, another Act was passed to rectify some of the drawbacks.<\/li>\n<li>The next landmark Act came in <strong>1919<\/strong> under the <strong>Montague-Chelmsford Reforms<\/strong>, under which cooperation was made a <strong>provincial subject.<\/strong> It allowed the provinces to come up with their own legislation for governing cooperatives.<\/li>\n<li>Later, in <strong>1942,<\/strong> the British government announced the <strong>Multi-Unit Cooperative Societies Act<\/strong> to cover cooperative societies whose membership extended beyond one province.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Post independence:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In post-Independent India, in <strong>1958<\/strong>, the <strong>National Development Council (NDC)<\/strong> had recommended a national policy on cooperatives and also for training personnel and setting up cooperative marketing societies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)<\/strong>, a <strong>statutory body<\/strong>, was set up under National Cooperative Development Corporation Act, 1962.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1984,<\/strong> Parliament enacted the <strong>multi-state cooperative societies Act<\/strong> to remove the plethora of laws governing the same types of societies.<\/li>\n<li>In 2002, government announced a <strong>National Policy on Cooperatives<\/strong> to support the promotion and development of cooperatives.
