{"id":121256,"date":"2021-07-26T16:40:54","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T11:10:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?page_id=121256"},"modified":"2021-07-26T16:40:54","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T11:10:54","slug":"south-asian-association-for-regional-cooperation-saarc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/south-asian-association-for-regional-cooperation-saarc\/","title":{"rendered":"South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>About SAARC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is an intergovernmental organization for the development of economic and regional integration.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SAARC was established with the signing of the SAARC Charter in Dhaka on 8<sup>th<\/sup> December 1985.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Member states<\/strong>: SAARC comprises of eight Member States: <strong>Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan <\/strong>and <strong>Sri Lanka<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Secretariat of the Association was set up in <strong>Kathmandu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives<\/strong>: The objectives of the Association as outlined in the SAARC Charter are:\n<ul>\n<li>to promote the <strong>welfare of the peoples of South Asia<\/strong> and to improve their quality of life.<\/li>\n<li>to <strong>accelerate economic growth, social progress<\/strong> and <strong>cultural development<\/strong> in the region.<\/li>\n<li>to provide all individuals the <strong>opportunity to live in dignity<\/strong> and to realize their full potentials<\/li>\n<li>to promote and strengthen <strong>collective self-reliance<\/strong> among the countries of South Asia<\/li>\n<li>to contribute to <strong>mutual trust<\/strong>, understanding and appreciation of one another&#8217;s problems<\/li>\n<li>to promote <strong>active collaboration<\/strong> and <strong>mutual assistance<\/strong> in the economic, social, cultural, technical and scientific fields<\/li>\n<li>to <strong>strengthen cooperation among themselves <\/strong>and <strong>with other developing countries<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>to <strong>cooperate<\/strong> with <strong>international and regional organizations<\/strong> with similar aims and purposes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Decisions at all levels are taken on the <strong>basis of unanimity<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bilateral and contentious issues are excluded<\/strong> from the deliberations of the Association.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SAARC bodies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SAARC has established various specialized bodies like<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>South Asian University (SAU)<\/li>\n<li>South Asian Regional Standards Organization (SARSO)<\/li>\n<li>SAARC Development Fund (SDF)<\/li>\n<li>SAARC Arbitration Council (SARCO)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>SAARC satellite for South Asia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ISRO successfully launched the South Asia Satellite (GSAT-9) in 2017.
