About\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Similipal<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Biosphere Reserve:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It was formally designated a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in May 1973.\u00a0<\/span>It was<\/span>\u00a0declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1979 with an area of 2750 sq. Km.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Origin of Name:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>The park<\/span>\u00a0derives its name from \u2018<\/span>Simul\u2019<\/span>, which are red silk cotton trees growing in the area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>The park<\/span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span>declared a biosphere reserve by the Government of India in<\/span>\u00a01994. It is a part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves<\/span> since 2009.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Location<\/span><\/b>: Simlipal\u00a0<\/span>biosphere\u00a0<\/span>reserve located in the\u00a0<\/span>Mayurbhanj district of Odisha<\/span>.<\/span> It is the 7th largest national park in India and Asia\u2019s second-largest Biosphere Reserve. It lies in the eastern end of the Eastern Ghat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span>Similipal<\/span>\u00a0is part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve.\u00a0<\/span>Other Protected Areas Include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Flora:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The park\u00a0has a high biodiversity with about 94 species of orchids and 3,000 species of plants. Among them,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sal is a dominant tree species<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in the park.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Fauna:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The park<\/span>\u00a0is home to the Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, gaur, and\u00a0<\/span>chausingha<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It\u00a0<\/span>also has a sizeable population of reptiles, which includes the longest venomous snake, the King cobra, and the <\/span>Tricarinate<\/span>\u00a0hill turtle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Rivers:<\/span><\/b> At least 12 rivers cut across the plain area, all of which drain into the Bay of Bengal. The prominent among them are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Burhabalanga,\u00a0 Palpala Bandan,\u00a0 Salandi,\u00a0 Kahairi and Deo<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It is also home to some beautiful waterfalls like <\/span>Joranda and Barehipani\u00a0Falls<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Tribes:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The two tribes namely\u00a0<\/span>Erenga<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kharias<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Mankirdias<\/span>\u00a0inhabit the reserve\u2019s forests. Other dominant tribes include the Ho, Gonda, and Munda among others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Threats:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Forest Fires in the Simlipal National Park: The forest fires seemed to be both due to natural causes and human-made causes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
