Around 40-70% of their diet consists of large ficus fruits, figs, drupes and berries, usually red or black in colour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conservation status: <\/strong>India is home to 9 species of Hornbill. All species except the Oriental pied hornbill are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972).<\/p>\n<p>These species are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Indian Grey Hornbill (Least Concern)<\/li>\n<li>Malabar Grey Hornbill (Vulnerable)<\/li>\n<li>Malabar Pied Hornbill (Near Threatened)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Great Hornbill (Vulnerable); <\/strong>Also in <strong>Schedule I <\/strong>of th<strong>e <\/strong>Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.<\/li>\n<li>Narcondam Hornbill (Vulnerable) is found only in the Narcondam Island of Andaman Sea.<\/li>\n<li>Rufous-necked Hornbill (Vulnerable)<\/li>\n<li>Wreathed-Hornbill (Vulnerable)<\/li>\n<li>White-throated Hornbill (Near Threatened) and<\/li>\n<li>Oriental Pied Hornbill (Least Concern)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cultural Symbol:<\/strong> They are the cultural symbols of some ethnic communities in the northeast, specifically the <strong>Nyishi<\/strong> of Arunachal Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Festival<\/strong>: The <strong>Hornbill Festival<\/strong> celebrated in Nagaland is named after the bird \u2013 Hornbill, which is the most revered and admired bird for the Nagas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>State Bird<\/strong>: Great Hornbill is the state bird of Arunachal Pradesh and Kerala.<\/li>\n<li>They also play essential roles in forest ecosystems as <strong>dispersers of seeds<\/strong> of forest plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Threat:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many Hornbills are today threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and loss of large trees that they need for feeding and nesting.<\/li>\n<li>Hornbills are hunted for their casques \u2014 upper beak \u2014 and feathers for adorning headgear.
