{"id":154409,"date":"2021-12-17T20:04:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T14:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?page_id=154409"},"modified":"2022-02-03T18:56:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T13:26:32","slug":"un-human-rights-council","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/un-human-rights-council\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Human Rights Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UNHRC and India: <\/strong>India is re-elected for a 6th term to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2022-24 term and vowed to for protection of human rights through \u201cSamman, Samvad and Sahyog&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About-<\/strong> The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the &#8216;United Nations&#8217; system.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The UNHRC replaced the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights.<\/li>\n<li>The Council was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006 by a resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Headquarters<\/strong>: Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mandate:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.<\/li>\n<li>It adresses situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Membership:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Council is made of 47 Member States, elected by the General Assembly of the UN through direct and secret ballot.\n<ul>\n<li>The General Assembly takes into account the candidate States&#8217; contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights, as well as their voluntary pledges and commitments in this regard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Council&#8217;s Membership is <strong>based on equitable geographical distribution<\/strong>. Seats are distributed as follows:\n<ul>\n<li>African States: 13 seats<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asia-Pacific States: 13 seats<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Latin American and Caribbean States: 8 seats<\/li>\n<li>Western European and other States: 7 seats<\/li>\n<li>Eastern European States: 6 seats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Members of the Council serve for a period of 3 years and are not eligible for immediate re-election after serving two consecutive terms.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Bureau of the Council<\/strong> consists of five people &#8211; one <strong>President<\/strong> and four <strong>Vice-presidents<\/strong> &#8211; representing the five regional groups. The commission also engages in the UN\u2019s special procedures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Council\u2019s work and functioning should be reviewed five years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UN\u2019s Special Procedures of Human Rights Council:<\/strong> These are independent human rights experts. They have the mandate to report and advise on human rights from a thematic or country-specific perspective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Universal Periodic Review(UPR):<\/strong> The council also carries out the Universal Periodic Review of all UN member states.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This allows civil society groups to bring accusations of human rights violations in member states to the attention of the UN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sessions: <\/strong>The Council holds no fewer than three regular sessions a year, for a total of at least ten weeks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If one third of the Member States requests so, the Council can hold a special session to address human rights violations and emergencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNHRC and India: India is re-elected for a 6th term to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2022-24 term and vowed to for protection of human rights through \u201cSamman, Samvad and Sahyog&#8221;.
