{"id":157492,"date":"2021-12-30T23:28:36","date_gmt":"2021-12-30T17:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?page_id=157492"},"modified":"2021-12-30T23:28:36","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T17:58:36","slug":"lagrange-points","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/lagrange-points\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagrange Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>About Lagrange points:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is named in honor of Italian-French <strong>mathematician Josephy-Louis Lagrange.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This <strong>mathematical problem<\/strong>, known as the<strong> &#8220;General Three-Body Problem&#8221;<\/strong> was considered by Lagrange in his prize winning paper (Essai sur le Probl\u00e8me des Trois Corps, 1772).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>These are positions in space where <strong>objects sent there tend to stay put.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At Lagrange points, the <strong>gravitational pull of two large masses precisely equals the centripetal force<\/strong> required for a small object to move with them.<\/li>\n<li>Lagrange Points produce enhanced regions of attraction and repulsion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Uses-<\/strong>These can be used<strong> by spacecraft to reduce fuel consumption<\/strong> needed<strong> to remain in position.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Different points:<\/strong> There are <strong>five such special points<\/strong> where a small mass can orbit in a constant pattern with two larger masses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Of the five Lagrange points,<strong> three are unstable<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The unstable Lagrange points &#8211; <strong>labeled L1, L2 and L3<\/strong> &#8211; lie along the line connecting the two large masses.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>L1 point<\/strong> of the <strong>Earth-Sun system<\/strong> affords an <strong>uninterrupted view of the sun<\/strong> and is currently home to the<strong> Solar and Heliospheric Observatory Satellite<\/strong> SOHO.<\/li>\n<li><strong>L2 is ideal for astronomy<\/strong> because a spacecraft is close enough to readily communicate with Earth, can keep Sun, Earth and Moon behind the spacecraft for solar power and provides a clear view of deep space for our telescopes.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>hard to find any use for the L3<\/strong> point since it <strong>remains hidden behind the Sun at all times.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remaining two are stable points<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The stable Lagrange points &#8211;<strong> labeled L4 and L5<\/strong> &#8211; form the apex of two equilateral triangles that have the large masses at their vertices.<\/li>\n<li>Objects found orbiting at the L4 and L5 points are often called <strong>Trojans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The L4 and L5 points are home to <strong>stable orbits so long<\/strong> as the <strong>mass ratio<\/strong> between the two large masses <strong>exceeds 24.96.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This condition is satisfied for both the Earth-Sun and Earth-Moon systems, and for many other pairs of bodies in the solar system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About Lagrange points: It is named in honor of Italian-French mathematician Josephy-Louis Lagrange.
