However, the females have a slightly more rounded carapace(shell) as compared to the male.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diet<\/strong>: These turtles are carnivores. They feed mainly on jellyfish, shrimp, snails, crabs, molluscs and a variety of fish and their eggs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Migration<\/strong>: They spend their entire lives in the ocean. Further, they migrate thousands of kilometres between feeding and mating grounds in a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats:\u00a0<\/strong>The major threats to Olive Ridley turtles are: <strong>a)<\/strong> Poor fishing practices, <strong>b)<\/strong> Development and exploitation of nesting beaches for ports, and tourist centres, <strong>c)<\/strong> Poaching for their meat, shell and leather.<\/p>\n<h5><span id=\"Mass_nesting_of_Olive_Ridley_Turtles\">Arribada (Mass Nesting) of Olive Ridley Turtles<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>They are best known for their unique mass nesting called Arribada. Under this, thousands of females come together on the same beach to lay eggs. Each female digs a sandpit lays 90 to 120 eggs and promptly closes the pit before leaving the shore.<\/p>\n<p>The coast of <strong>Odisha<\/strong> in India is the largest mass nesting site for the Olive-ridley. This is followed by the coasts of <strong>Mexico and Costa Rica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nesting site in India<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>The Odisha coast has three arribada beaches at <strong>Gahirmatha<\/strong>, <strong>the mouth of the Devi river, and in Rushikulya<\/strong>, where about 1 lakh nests are found annually.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Gahirmatha marine sanctuary<\/strong> in Odisha is considered the world\u2019s largest nesting beach for Olive Ridleys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rushikulya river mouth\u00a0<\/strong>is considered the second-biggest nesting site for Olive Ridley Turtles in India.<\/p>\n<p>Recently,\u00a0a new mass nesting site has been discovered in the <strong>Andaman and Nicobar Islands<\/strong>. As per reports, it has more than 5,000 nests in a season.<\/p>\n<h5><span id=\"Initiatives\">Initiatives to conserve Olive Ridley turtles<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Indian Coast Guard\u00a0<\/strong>undertakes<strong>\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/operation-olivia-to-protect-olive-ridley-turtles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Olivia<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>every year. It is an Olive Ridley Turtle protection program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To reduce the accidental killing in India,<\/strong>\u00a0the Odisha government has made it mandatory for trawls to use <strong>Turtle Excluder Devices(TEDs)<\/strong>.
