They live in the shallow, quiet, often stagnant waters of rivers, marshes, streams, lakes, ponds, irrigation canals, and tanks.<\/p>\n<p>They are found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh (Indus and Ganges drainages), and Myanmar (Irrawaddy and Salween Rivers).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indian Flapshell Turtle prefers waters with sand or mud bottoms because of their tendency to burrow.<\/p>\n<p>They are also\u00a0well adapted to drought conditions.<\/p>\n<p>They are known to be omnivorous. Their diet consists of frogs, shrimp, snails, aquatic vegetation, plant leaves, flowers, fruits, grasses and seeds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Smuggled and killed for their supposed aphrodisiac properties, used as livestock feed, to make leather from their skins, to make potions from their blood and to use as fishing bait, used for meat and medicines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Albino Indian Flapshell Turtle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-155525 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2de4cc84_4598517_1_mr.jpg?resize=335%2C191&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Albino Indian Flapshell turtle\" width=\"335\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2de4cc84_4598517_1_mr.jpg?w=928&amp;ssl=1 928w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2de4cc84_4598517_1_mr.jpg?resize=300%2C171&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2de4cc84_4598517_1_mr.jpg?resize=768%2C437&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is an Indian Flapshell Turtle that has been discovered several times in various parts of South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The different colour of the turtle may be due to albinism \u2013 a genetic disorder that causes a complete lack of pigments in the body, or a congenital disorder that is characterized by a complete or partial absence of tyrosine pigment.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em><strong>Note<\/strong>: Tyrosine is an amino acid that plays a vital role in the formation of melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives color to eyes, hair and skin. It\u2019s also the same pigment that\u2019s responsible for the color of turtles shells.
