News<\/strong>: Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have found a new mammal species named \u201cWhite Cheeked Macaque\u201d from central Arunachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

About White Cheeked Macaque (<\/strong>Macaca leucogenys)<\/p>\n

It was first discovered in 2015 <\/b><\/strong>by a group of Chinese scientists from southeastern Tibet.<\/p>\n

This macaque is distinct from other macaques <\/b><\/strong>found in the region as it displays white cheeks, long and thick hairs on the neck area and a longer tail.<\/p>\n

It is also the last mammal to have been discovered in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0Arunachal macaque, as well as the White Cheeked Macaque, exist in the same biodiversity hotspot in the eastern Himalayas.<\/p>\n

Significance of this discovery<\/strong><\/p>\n

India\u2019s mammal count will increase from 437 to 438 because till now it was not known that the species existed in India.<\/p>\n

Septemeranthus – parasitic flowering plant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

News<\/strong>: A new genus of a parasitic flowering plant named \u201cSeptemeranthus\u201d <\/i><\/em>has recently been discovered from the Nicobar group of islands.<\/p>\n

About Septemeranthus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Septemeranthus belongs to the family Loranthaceae, a hemi-parasite under the sandalwood order Santalales.<\/p>\n

Note: <\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong>Loranthaceae is currently represented by nine genera and are found all across India.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Habitat<\/strong>: Endemic to the Nicobar group of islands.<\/p>\n

Salient features of Septemeranthus<\/strong><\/p>\n

It grows on the plant species Horsfieldia glabra <\/i><\/em>(Blume) Warb. It partially depends on its host but also has leaves capable of photosynthesis.<\/p>\n

The plant has a distinct vegetative morphology, inflorescence architecture and floral characters.<\/p>\n

The leaves of the plant are heart-shaped with a very long tip and the ovary, fruit and seeds are \u2018urceolate\u2019 (earthen pot-shaped).<\/p>\n
