Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as television, radio, newspapers, telephone, internet etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact of media on Indian society:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Democratisation of Information: <\/strong>Social media platforms provided Indians with a platform to raise their voice against injustice and inequality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bringing Behavioural Change: <\/strong>Use of media for policy crowdsourcing and publicity is evident in the success of pan-India campaigns such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Fit India Movement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Citizen-led governance:<\/strong> Highlight the trouble spots in the society\u00a0and <strong>press the government<\/strong> and public to devise suitable mechanisms to eliminate them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Menace of Fake News:<\/strong> The rise of polarizing and divisive content has been a defining moment of modern politics, which is fed by fake news propagation through social media channels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyberbullying or Trolling:<\/strong> Another dangerous element is the labelling and trolling of more rational voices or those who disagreed with the government\u2019s actions or dominant public discourse as \u201canti-national.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Indian TV debates on national security issues tend to cut out development of contrary views and perspectives by imposing commercial breaks, or go hectoring themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Communal harmony is of paramount component for the social, economic and cultural development of any country.\u00a0 Media could play a constructive role in bringing communal harmony in following manner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organise exhibitions<\/strong> highlighting unity in diversity in the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organise film festivals and screen films<\/strong> that depict our country\u2019s rich diverse culture, and appreciation of this diversity.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage people to celebrate festivals of different religion together.<\/li>\n<li>Maximize the availability of relevant and credible\u00a0<strong>information<\/strong>to all citizens and their communities.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen the<strong>\u00a0capacity<\/strong>\u00a0of individuals to engage with information.<\/li>\n<li>Promote individual<strong>engagement<\/strong>\u00a0with information and the public life of the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is need to give more powers to \u2018Press Council of India\u2019 (PCI) as despite being quasi-judicial it can only warn and not punish.<\/li>\n<li>We need more self-regulation with less government control to avoid conflict of interests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction:\u00a0Contextual introduction.
