Enumerate the factors behind the reduction in TB cases in India and suggest what more can be done to sustain the progress."},"content":{"rendered":"<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"616\"><strong>Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong>Contextual introduction.<br \/>\n<strong>Body:\u00a0<\/strong>Write some factors behind the reduction in TB cases in India.\u00a0\u00a0Also write more can be done to sustain the progress.<br \/>\n<strong>Conclusion<\/strong>: Write a way forward.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious\u00a0<strong>airborne bacterial disease.<\/strong>\u00a0According to\u00a0<strong>WHO\u2019s Global TB report 2022<\/strong>, India had done better in major metrics as compared to other countries over time.\u00a0The National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) aims to strategically\u00a0reduce TB burden in India by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Factors behind the reduction in TB cases in India:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A range of forward-looking policies have been implemented including critical schemes such as\u00a0<strong>Ni-kshayPoshan Yojana (NPY),<\/strong>\u00a0which helped\u00a0<strong>meet the nutritional requirements<\/strong>\u00a0of TB patients, especially the underserved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ayushman Bharat \u2013 Health and Wellness Centres<\/strong>are established to decentralize comprehensive primary healthcare including TB care services at the grassroots level.<\/li>\n<li>Initiated strategies to\u00a0<strong>engage the community and create a\u00a0Jan Andolan<\/strong>to reach out to the underserved and marginalized and support patients in accessing care.<\/li>\n<li>Creation of\u00a0<strong>Patient Support Groups (PSGs)<\/strong>to facilitate conversations between patients, doctors and their caregivers to address common issues in treatment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using Information Technology (IT) tools<\/strong>for monitoring the programme and treatment adherence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Incentives to private providers<\/strong>for following the standard protocols for diagnosis and treatment as well as for notifying the government of cases.<\/li>\n<li>Patients referred to the government receive a\u00a0<strong>cash transfer<\/strong>to compensate them for the direct and indirect costs of undergoing treatment and as an incentive to complete treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What more can be done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is an urgent need for\u00a0<strong>cost-effective point-of-care devices<\/strong>that can be deployed for TB diagnosis in different settings across India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Service delivery<\/strong>should be optimised so that the diagnostics and drugs reach to people who need them the most.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poverty and malnutrition<\/strong>are two main reasons for TB. Elected representatives need to ensure steps for the eradication of these.<\/li>\n<li>There is a need to aggressively\u00a0<strong>scale up testing with innovative strategies<\/strong>such as active surveillance, bidirectional screening for respiratory tract infections using the most sensitive molecular diagnostics, and contact tracing.<\/li>\n<li>The government must ensure that\u00a0<strong>social security programmes <\/strong>are duly implemented. They work towards prevention of modifiable risk factors like malnutrition, poverty etc.<\/li>\n<li>There is also a need to consider\u00a0<strong>telemedicine and remote support\u00a0<\/strong>as important aspects of health services that could play a pivotal role in early detection and treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Collective effort is desired at local, national and international level to attain\u00a0<strong>SDG 3.3<\/strong>\u00a0which aims to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases by 2030.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction:\u00a0Contextual introduction.
