According to the <strong>Internet and Mobile Association of India <\/strong>(IAMAI)\u2019s report- <strong>\u201cInternet in India\u201d, <\/strong>at present, there are a total of 692 million active internet users in India\u00a0and there will be 900 million internet users in India by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need to protect the openness of the internet:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Digital technologies<\/strong>are <strong>evolving at a very fast rate<\/strong>. The code of conduct and regulations can not catch up with the new gateway providers that are emerging.<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes internet gateways enable and <strong>restrict access to other<\/strong> gateways or networks, so the openness of the internet is threatened.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Internet\u2019s economic importance<\/strong> has grown exponentially, driven by a higher number of users and the growing adoption of digital tools like <strong>E-commerce, cloud computing, online advertising, digital payments<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Various practices of the distribution platforms like <strong>Google and Apple<\/strong> have come into question lately. These ranges from restrictions on payment gateways,\u00a0<strong>advertising choices, app policies<\/strong>and various other aspects which are <strong>discriminatory in both principle and practice. <\/strong>g.<strong> Google Play Store and Apple\u2019s App Store <\/strong>are said to be charging up to <strong>30% commission<\/strong> on payments processed.<\/li>\n<li>As Google and Apple have garnered\u00a0<strong>unilateral control<\/strong>over the publishing of smartphone applications on their OS. Various <strong>smartphone application-dependent businesses and developers<\/strong> continue to remain <strong>vulnerable<\/strong> to such\u00a0<strong>internal business policy changes<\/strong>\u00a0on these platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Indian government has taken steps to maintain its\u00a0<strong>sovereignty<\/strong>\u00a0through the path-breaking and disruptive\u00a0<strong>digital public goods<\/strong>\u00a0like Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, and CoWIN.
