Also, suggest further improvements to these programs.<br \/>\n<strong>Conclusion<\/strong>: Write a way forward.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Biodiversity can be defined as a community of all the living organisms on the earth and the diversity among them from all the ecosystems. At the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, countries adopted a major biodiversity pact called <strong>Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, <\/strong>to take urgent action to protect and restore the world\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p>\n<h2>The following initiatives can be helpful in making India a biodiversity champion:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Mission for a Green India:<\/strong> It is one of the eight Missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). It aims to increase forest cover on degraded lands and protect existing forested lands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green Credit Programme:\u00a0<\/strong> the government will incentivise the companies, individuals and local bodies that adhere to sustainable practises under the Environment (Protection) Act and help mobilize additional resources for such activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats &amp; Tangible Incomes (MISHTI):<\/strong>It will facilitate mangrove plantation along India&#8217;s coastline and on salt pan lands, wherever feasible, through convergence between MGNREGS, CAMPA Fund and other sources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PM Programme for Restoration, Awareness, Nourishment, and Amelioration of Mother Earth (PM\u00adPRANAM):<\/strong> to incentivize States and Union Territories to promote alternative fertilizers and balanced use of chemical fertilizers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amrit Dharohar scheme:<\/strong> to encourage optimal use of wetlands, and enhance biodiversity, carbon stock, eco\u00adtourism opportunities and income generation for local communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The following improvements to these programs are required:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use<\/strong><strong>modern concepts of sustainability<\/strong>: The focus should be on\u00a0<strong>valuation of ecosystems that consider ecological, cultural, and sociological aspects<\/strong>\u00a0of our biological wealth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Careful site selection: <\/strong>There is need for greater emphasis on\u00a0<strong>diversity of mangrove species\u00a0<\/strong>with retention of the\u00a0<strong>integrity of coastal<\/strong><strong> mud flats and salt pans.<\/strong> <strong>Traditional Knowledge and practices<\/strong>of <strong>local and nomadic communities<\/strong> should be integrated into the implementation plans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecological restoration<\/strong><strong>rather than tree plantation:<\/strong> For the Green India Mission, there is a need to choose sites where it can contribute to\u00a0<strong>ecological connectivity<\/strong>\u00a0in landscapes fragmented by\u00a0<strong>linear infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There is a need to sustain ecological flows through <strong>reduction in water use in key sectors<\/strong>. E.g. by encouraging changes to\u00a0<strong>less water intensive crops\u00a0<\/strong>such as millets and\u00a0<strong>investments in water recycling<\/strong>in urban areas.<\/li>\n<li>Each programme should include significant\u00a0<strong>educational and research funding<\/strong>to bring awareness to India\u2019s biological wealth.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>National Mission on Biodiversity and Human Well Being<\/strong>should be immediately launched by the government to harness the power of\u00a0<strong>interdisciplinary knowledge\u00a0<\/strong>for greening India and its economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any effort at conserving and enhancing biodiversity can only succeed if we tackle the challenge of global warming.
