Recently, UNGA adopted a resolution, calling for an end to the war. The resolution was favoured by 141 members and opposed by seven, while 32 states abstained. India was one among the 32.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Indian position on the Ukraine crisis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India has refused to\u00a0condemn Russia\u00a0for the invasion. It has <strong>refused to\u00a0join the West\u2019s sanctions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has stepped up buying Russian fuel at a discounted price and has <strong>consistently<\/strong><strong>abstained from UN votes<\/strong>\u00a0on the war.<\/li>\n<li>Neither the\u00a0<strong>weakening of Russia nor the destruction of Ukraine<\/strong>is in its interests. India wants an immediate end to the war and a\u00a0<strong>new security equilibrium<\/strong>\u00a0between great powers.<\/li>\n<li>India has given the reasons behind it that it wants to maintain a\u00a0<strong>strategic autonomy and has stressed on diplomacy and dialogue<\/strong>as the only way forward.<\/li>\n<li>India has decided to continue trade with Russia despite the sanctions imposed.<\/li>\n<li>Though India refused to endorse Russian aggression, Indian made some crucial diplomatic contributions such as,\u00a0<strong>a)<\/strong>Underlined the importance of respecting the United Nations Charter,\u00a0<strong>b)<\/strong>\u00a0Emphasised the inviolability of territorial sovereignty,\u00a0<strong>c)<\/strong>\u00a0Warned against the use of nuclear weapons,\u00a0<strong>d)<\/strong>\u00a0Sought to draw attention to the economic impact of the war on the \u201cGlobal South\u201d,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Issues:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s abstaining has raised questions\u00a0<strong>a<\/strong>bout <strong>India\u2019s global commitment to nuclear disarmament<\/strong> and strengthening the non-proliferation order.<\/li>\n<li>Russia is <strong>deepening its ties with China<\/strong>. India should ask itself whether it should retain its leverage over Russia through existing ties or lose it completely by joining the western coalition over moral commitments.<\/li>\n<li>To manage its continental interests and tackle its <strong>continental security concerns<\/strong>, India has to work with powers in the Eurasian landmass where the U.S. is practically absent, especially after its disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>India should stick to its pragmatic neutrality,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>rooted in realism, and continue to push for a practical solution to the Ukraine crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction: Contextual introduction.
