Strengthening civic engagement through Model Youth Gram Sabhas can transform grassroots democracy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Model Youth Gram Sabhas: Seeding Leadership &amp; Civic Pride<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>73rd Constitutional Amendment (1992)<\/strong> legitimised the Gram Sabha as the foundation of the Panchayati Raj system, ensuring <strong>direct democracy, decentralization, and participative governance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Yet, low awareness and limited youth engagement dilute its transformative potential. Against this backdrop, <strong>Model Youth Gram Sabhas (MYGS)<\/strong> serve as a simulation-based civic platform that empowers students to learn governance by practising it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Nurturing Local Leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Experiential Governance Learning<\/strong>: MYGS enables students to assume real governance roles\u2014Sarpanch, ward member, health worker\u2014discussing budgets, social audits, and development plans. Transforms textbook civics into lived experience, echoing <strong>John Dewey\u2019s experiential learning theory<\/strong>, \u201clearning by doing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leadership Pipeline for Rural Governance<\/strong>: India has <strong>46% youth population<\/strong> (UNFPA, 2023). MYGS instills leadership attributes\u2014deliberation, negotiation, consensus building\u2014preparing future administrators and elected representatives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Role Modelling &amp; Aspirational Governance<\/strong>: Similar to <strong>Model United Nations (MUNs)<\/strong> fostering global citizenship, MYGS nurtures <strong>local citizenship, <\/strong>pride in community service, and aspiration towards public leadership.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Fostering Civic Pride and Active Citizenship<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The programme promotes a shift from politics as power to politics as participation.<\/li>\n<li>Students experience how <strong>village-level decisions impact public goods<\/strong>\u2014roads, drinking water, health centres, anganwadis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social accountability tools<\/strong>\u2014social audits, participatory planning, community scorecards\u2014become familiar instruments.
