The UN Human\nRights Commission in October 2009 declared casteism as a form of human rights\nabuse and has begun the process of criminalising casteism. It can be done by bringing them\ninto the wider Indian democratic experience. Our constitution has many\nprovisions regarding weaker sections, but there are many challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why social\nrevolution is needed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The linguistic accessibility of\nthe Constitution and its reach to the oppressed is extremely limited. Few\npeasants would consider the Constitution as a written word that would guarantee\nthem protection from the landlord\u2019s real and financial whipcord. Similarly,\nbeggars who are living on the mercy of donors\u2019 charity would think that this document\nguarantees them equality and access to freedom. Thus, it creates gaps while\nconsidering constitutional morality as a common virtue. <\/li>
  2. One has to pierce through the agenda\nof casteism by injecting a radical antidote to set a tone of mutuality and\nrespectability. Unless this is settled, no further conversation can be foreseen\nthat will yield real results.<\/li>
  3. Day to day mob lynching,\natrocities against Dalits, especially women, demand a deeper look into society\nand prejudices. <\/li>
  4. The landmark case of Surya\nNarayan Chaudhury v. State of Rajasthan<\/strong> prohibited temples from\ndiscriminating against Dalits\u2019 right to worship and enter the sacrosanct spaces\nas a rule of law. But \u2018mere enactment of such a law or guaranteeing a right in\nthe Constitution of India is not enough and the change needed is really in our\nhearts and not elsewhere.Inadequacies of legal provisions in the absence of\nsociety\u2019s willingness to acknowledge its prejudices is an issue.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
