In recent years, India has witnessed new waves of extremism that have taken the lives of many innocent people. Whether based on religious, ethnic or political grounds, extremist ideologies glorify the supremacy of a particular group, and oppose a more tolerant and inclusive society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Various form of Extremism- a threat\nto India\u2019s fabric: <\/strong>India\nfaces various form of extremism threats. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Islamic extremism: <\/strong>It is major form of extremism faced\nby India primarily due to state sponsorship. Main theatre of it is Kashmir.\nGlobal Islamic terror groups have made limited inroads into the country. Though\nIndia has the second largest Muslim population in the world, Muslims make up\napproximately 14% of India\u2019s Hindu-majority population. Kashmir has been the\nsource of a violent insurgency since the late 1980s.<\/li><li><strong>Left-wing extremism: <\/strong>It is the single biggest internal\nsecurity threat in the country. Left-wing rebels, also known as Naxalites or\nMaoists, have waged a low-level insurgency in India\u2019s south-central regions\nsince 60s. Despite counterinsurgency operations launched by the Indian\ngovernment, no peace agreement has been reached, and over 20,000 civilians have\nbeen been killed in the Naxalite insurgency since 1980.<\/li><li><strong>Extremism in Northeast India: <\/strong>North-east is connected to the rest\nof the country by a land corridor of less than 30 kilometre wide. It is a\nhighly volatile region since Indian independence. Each of the seven states has\nexperienced an insurgency at some point since 1947. Most violence has been\ndirected either at the Indian government or at illegal immigrants from neighbouring\nBangladesh.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Impact of extremism:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Security threats: <\/strong>Extremism causes threat to the\nsecurity of the nation and assets of the country. It threaten unity and diversity\nof the nation. Radicalisation of youth pose a threat to internal security. It\nhas impacted development of the affected region leading to many people still\nliving under poverty.<\/li><li><strong>Social impact: <\/strong>It violates human rights and\nendanger fundamental rights of indian citizens. It lead to intolerance in communities,\nthereby endangering peace and cohesion in society.<\/li><li><strong>Psychological impact: <\/strong>It instil a fear of life in minds of\ncitizens. Trauma due to violence not only impact psyche of the individual but\ncreate a tense environment in the region.<\/li><li><strong>Economic impact: <\/strong>The direct costs of extremism are\nthe destruction of infrastructure and stoppage of developmental activities. Its\nindirect costs are multiple and arise out of general loss of confidence in the\neconomy. Further it impact flow of investment to the nation thereby restricting\ngrowth potential of the country. It lead to various costs on intelligence,\nmilitary, and police organizations. <\/li><li><strong>Political Instability: <\/strong>Extremism has impacted domestic\npolitical structures in India in a negative way. It has lead to political\ninstabilities across the nation.<\/li><li><strong>Demographic loss:<\/strong> Extremism has misguided the youth\nof the region on the basis of false ideologies for destructive activities by\nbrainwashing them. This has not only endanger demography but also lead to loss\nof demographic dividend in the region. <\/li><li><strong>Impact Tourism:<\/strong> Extremism impact tourism industry.\nCultural diversity of India is huge, which remained unexploited due to\nterrorism. People usually avoid visiting countries under threat of violence.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solutions to tackle extremism in\nIndia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Participatory decision-making should\nbe enhanced and role of civic society at national and local levels should be\nincreased.<\/li><li>Effective socio-economic alternatives\nshould be provided to the groups at risks. Alternate employment opportunity\nshould be generated.<\/li><li>Capacity of local governments should\nbe strengthened for service delivery and security.<\/li><li>Credible intermediaries to promote\ndialogue with alienated groups and re-integration of former extremists should\nbe supported.<\/li><li>Youth should be engaged in building\nsocial cohesion and de-radicalisation programmes should be carried out.<\/li><li>Government should work with\nfaith-based organizations and religious leaders to counter the abuse of\nreligion by extremists.<\/li><li>Respect for human rights, diversity\nand a culture of global citizenship in schools and universities should be\npromoted.<\/li><li>Measures should be taken to increase\nthe capacity of the judiciary and security agencies, not only to detect and\nprevent violent activities, but also to ensure that the proper judicial process\nand the legal and human rights. <\/li><li>Government should fight corruption\nat all levels to enhance the legitimacy of state institutions, directly\ncontributing to reduced perceptions of injustice and inequality. Building\ncapacities of anti-corruption institutions, capacities of civil society to\nmonitor transparency and accountability in government and in assessing\ncorruption risks is important.<\/li><li>Women should be empowered to reduce\nthe sense of injustice and discrimination against them. The systematic\ndiscrimination and abuse of women is a strategic and deliberate tactic of a\nnumber of extremist groups. Women\u2019s organizations should provide alternative\nsocial, educational and economic activities for at-risk young women and men. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 commits member states to \u201cpromote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development\u201d. This goal cannot be achieved in an environment of extremism.
