Peninsular India is surrounded by water on 3 sides and has a deep network of rivers. The Indian coastline is 7500 km long, distributed along 9 coastal states, 2 groups of islands and 4 union territories. The coastal belt comprises of a wide range of ecosystems extending from beaches and mangroves to coral reefs. These Coastal states can play an important role in overall development of ports and inland waterways for sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Value of coastline and waterways:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Fishing industry:<\/strong> Fishing is an important livelihood\nof the people in India. Besides, seafood is a cheap and nutritional component\nof their diet, the total commercial marine catch for India account for\napproximately 30% of all landings.<\/li>
  2. Tourism: <\/strong>India has a long coastline along the\nmainland and numerous islands. It has achieved commendable success in Goa and Andaman\nregarding beach tourism. Beach tourism is an important commercial activity.<\/li>
  3. Transport: <\/strong>These water bodies are important for\nlogistics and transport that is important for growth of various sectors of\neconomy.<\/li>
  4. Tidal energy: <\/strong>The energy produced by the periodic\nrise and fall of ocean water, due to the gravitational force of the moon, sun\nand earth can be harnessed to produce electricity. Tidal energy could become an\nimportant source of energy in future, because it is a renewable resource. <\/li>
  5. Minerals from the sea: <\/strong>Coal, oil and natural gas can be\nobtained from under the seabed. Many minerals are also present in sea water.\nThe most common one is salt. India has large reserves of beach sand minerals,\nsuch as ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Role of states in development of\nports and waterways for sustainable development:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Implementing policies at ground\nlevel: <\/strong>States need\nto play a proactive role in implementing various government policies at local\nlevel. Proper implementation can lead to development of Coastal region and\nproviding livelihood to many.<\/li>
    2. Controlling Coastal Pollution: <\/strong>Pollution changes coastal habitats\nand destroys fish and other species. The Indian coastline is vulnerable to\nerosion along the coasts of the western states of Kerala and Karnataka. These\nstates need to play an active role in preventing such issues through regulation\nand strict implementation of policies to achieve a sustainable growth.<\/li>
    3. Safeguarding marine eco-system:<\/strong> Indian coasts have a large variety\nof sensitive eco-systems. E.g. Sand dunes, coral reefs, mangroves, and\nwetlands. They are nursery of a number of commercially important fish and\ncrustaceans. Ensuring survival of these eco-systems is in the hands of states.\nThese are not only important for environment but also for livelihood of many.<\/li>
    4. Implementing laws: <\/strong>States need to play the most important\nrole in implementing laws like Coastal zone management, watershed development\nat local level. Ensuring their transparent implementation is not important only\nto check corruption but is required for overall development of the region.<\/li>
    5. Disaster preparedness: <\/strong>State has to play a vital role when\nit comes to tackle disasters. Disasters destroy valuable lives and property. State\nmust be prepared to act against and minimise damage due to disasters to coasts\nand community living around. States need to prepare a disaster management\nguidelines and aware people about what to do during disaster.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      India should expedite its efforts to exploit marine resources in India and its Coastal states. What required is the cooperative federalism and active involvement of states. India has rightly launched O-SMART scheme aiming at regulated use of oceans, marine resources for sustainable development in this direction.
