Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems or e-cigarettes are battery-operated, handheld devices that are alternatives to traditional smoking of cigarette. It emits doses of vaporised nicotine, or non-nicotine solutions, for the user to inhale. Inhaling e-cigarettes is injurious to health with major health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associated\nrisks and other ill effects of e-cigarettes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Drugs intake: <\/strong>They are now being used for\nother purposes such as inhaling various drugs etc. This lead to increase in\ndrug consumption among youth. Continued use of nicotine can make other drugs,\nsuch as cocaine, more pleasurable.<\/li>
  2. Addictive: <\/strong>Most e-cigarettes contain\nnicotine, which is addictive and lead to changes in the adolescent brain.\nNicotine is more addictive than tobacco.<\/li>
  3. Risk to heart: <\/strong>E-cigarettes adversely\naffects the cardiovascular system with increased risk of hear attacks.<\/li>
  4. Respiratory diseases:<\/strong> It impairs\nrespiratory immune cells function and airways similar to cigarette smoking and\nis responsible for severe respiratory disease like asthma.<\/li>
  5. Risk pregnancy:<\/strong> It poses risk to foetal,\ninfant and child brain development. Therefore harmful to both mother and child.<\/li>
  6. Carcinogenic: <\/strong>The liquid contains\nsubstances that are carcinogens such as nitrosamines.<\/li>
  7. Lung disease: <\/strong>E-cigarettes expose the\nlungs to different substances. One of these is diacetyl, which can causes\nsevere and irreversible lung disease.<\/li>
  8. Fatal: <\/strong>Accidental swallowing of liquid\nfrom e-cigarette has been fatal in many cases.<\/li>
  9. Not a smoking cessation device: <\/strong>People\nwho use or who have used e-cigarettes are less likely to stop smoking\naltogether as they stop using conventional and medically monitored methods of\ndoing so. A 2017 analysis of PATH data found that smokers who used e-cigarettes\nto quit smoking were more successful than non-e-cigarette users.<\/li>
  10. Dual users: <\/strong>Teens who use e-cigarette\nproducts are more likely to start using regular tobacco as well.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Mizoram, Jammu and\nKashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have already prohibited the use of e-cigarettes,Electronic\nNicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS).<\/li>
    2. Thirty countries including Australia, Singapore\nand Sri Lanka have already brought in such bans.<\/li>
    3. These products are not registered as nicotine\nreplacement therapy products in India. E-cigarettes usually contain nicotine\nwhich makes product addictive.<\/li>
    4. E-cigarettes cause health hazards for youth,\nyoung adults, and pregnant women.<\/li>
    5. A number of metals, including lead, chromium,\nand nickel, and chemicals like formaldehyde have been found in aerosols of some\nENDS, with concentrations equal to or greater than traditional cigarettes which\ncause cancer.<\/li>
    6. Traditional cigarette manufacturing companies\nare having parallel e-cigarette like device making industries. This growing hub\nin India is under-regulated.<\/li>
    7. Lack of knowledge about negative effects of\nnicotine and easy accessibility of these products make the youth prone to\naddiction.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
