Today world is facing intolerance and extremism which means adoption of extreme political, social or religious ideals that reject or undermine the status quo and undermine contemporary ideas and expressions of freedom. In recent years, India has witnessed new waves of extremism that have taken the lives of many innocent people. Whether based on religious, ethnic or political grounds, extremist ideologies glorify the supremacy of a particular group, and oppose a more tolerant and inclusive society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various\nform of Extremism- a threat to India\u2019s fabric:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Islamic\nextremism:<\/strong> It is major form of extremism faced by India primarily due to state\nsponsorship. Main theatre of it is Kashmir. Global Islamic terror groups have\nmade limited inroads into the country. Though India has the second largest\nMuslim population in the world, Muslims make up approximately 14% of India\u2019s\nHindu-majority population. Kashmir has been the source of a violent insurgency\nsince the late 1980s.<\/li>
  2. Left-wing\nextremism:<\/strong> It is the single biggest internal security threat in the country.\nLeft-wing rebels, also known as Naxalites or Maoists, have waged a low-level\ninsurgency in India\u2019s south-central regions since 60s. Despite\ncounterinsurgency operations launched by the Indian government, no peace\nagreement has been reached, and over 20,000 civilians have been been killed in\nthe Naxalite insurgency since 1980.<\/li>
  3. Extremism\nin Northeast India:<\/strong> North-east is connected to the rest of the country\nby a land corridor of less than 30 kilometre wide. It is a highly volatile\nregion since Indian independence. Each of the seven states has experienced an\ninsurgency at some point since 1947. Most violence has been directed either at\nthe Indian government or at illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Solutions\nto tackle extremism in India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Participatory\ndecision-making should be enhanced and role of civic society at national and\nlocal levels should be increased.<\/li>
    2. Effective\nsocio-economic alternatives should be provided to the groups at risks.\nAlternate employment opportunity should be generated.<\/li>
    3. Capacity of local\ngovernments should be strengthened for service delivery and security.<\/li>
    4. Credible\nintermediaries to promote dialogue with alienated groups and re-integration of\nformer extremists should be supported.<\/li>
    5. Youth should be\nengaged in building social cohesion and de-radicalisation programmes should be\ncarried out.<\/li>
    6. Government should\nwork with faith-based organizations and religious leaders to counter the abuse\nof religion by extremists.<\/li>
    7. Respect for human\nrights, diversity and a culture of global citizenship in schools and universities\nshould be promoted.<\/li>
    8. Measures should be\ntaken to increase the capacity of the judiciary and security agencies, not only\nto detect and prevent violent activities, but also to ensure that the proper\njudicial process and the legal and human rights.<\/li>
    9. Government should\nfight corruption at all levels to enhance the legitimacy of state institutions,\ndirectly contributing to reduced perceptions of injustice and inequality.\nBuilding capacities of anti-corruption institutions, capacities of civil\nsociety to monitor transparency and accountability in government and in\nassessing corruption risks is important.<\/li>
    10. Women should be\nempowered to reduce the sense of injustice and discrimination against them. The\nsystematic discrimination and abuse of women is a strategic and deliberate\ntactic of a number of extremist groups. Women\u2019s organizations should provide\nalternative social, educational and economic activities for at-risk young women\nand men.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Sustainable\nDevelopment Goal (SDG) 16 commits member states to \u201cpromote peaceful and\ninclusive societies for sustainable development\u201d. This goal cannot be achieved\nin an environment of extremism.
