Recent incidents of divorcing a frog couple to the floods in Madhya Pradesh after their grand wedding two months ago, for rains indicate that scientific temper as was mentioned in Article 51A as a fundamental duty has not been achieved even after 70 years of growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reasons for\nfailure to develop the scientific temper:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Illiteracy: <\/strong>Still millions of people\nare illiterate. About 25% Indians are illiterate. This is a major hindrance to developing\nan attitude of scientific temper in Indians.<\/li>
  2. Women backwardness: <\/strong>Indian women are\nstill not fully empowered. And empowered educated women is must to instil a\nscientific temper among its children and in the house.<\/li>
  3. Religion: <\/strong>Often the structural rigidities\nhave their roots in religion. This religious roots makes it a daunting task as\nthere are high chances of communal tension flaring up when these rigidities are\nchallenged.<\/li>
  4. Orthodox Society: <\/strong>The orthodox elements\nof the Indian society restrict the inquisitiveness among the children. Thus the\nspirit of enquiry gets buried in childhood itself.<\/li>
  5. Education System:<\/strong> The Indian education\nsystem is evolving into a platform of gaining employment rather than gaining\nknowledge. This restricts the spirit of enquiry.<\/li>
  6. Attitude: <\/strong>Even the educated blindly\nfollow the norms and superstitions due to lack of spirit of enquiry. This\nresults in growing of superstitions blindly and it is trickling down from\ngeneration to generation.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Measures to\ninstil scientific temper among Indians:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Catch them young: <\/strong>Scientific temper can\nbe best developed during childhood in schools if education is imparted through\nmeans like stories, painting, recitation, games, group projects etc. so that\nchildren open up and are not afraid of asking questions to their teachers which\nstrengthens their inquisitiveness.<\/li>
    2. Mid-level schools: <\/strong>Students in colleges\nneed to be placed in analytical situations through role play, quizzes, model\nmaking etc. where critical and rational thinking are needed. Making students\naware of the impact of science on society by arranging visits to factories,\nhospitals, research laboratories, and encouraging them to participate in\nscience exhibitions.<\/li>
    3. Reform of religious instruction:<\/strong> Instead\nof countering religious teachings, the superstitious and orthodox elements in\nreligious instructions should be discouraged by reviving the scientific Vedic\nlearning, like philosophy of \u2018Advait Vedanta\u2019 or absolute monism which is more\nlike modern science.<\/li>
    4. National Framework on Developing Scientific\nCulture: <\/strong>Academicians, government experts, and scientists should\ncollectively deliberate on a unified set of objective guidelines which define\nthe contours of scientific temper and standards which should be followed by\nuniversities.<\/li>
    5. Strengthening local level institutions: <\/strong>Spreading\nawareness about science and reasoning should start from rural areas through\ncapacity building and scientific demonstration programs at Panchayats which can\nkeep a check on activities like witchcraft etc.<\/li>
    6. Restraining public figures:<\/strong> Public\nfigures like politicians and professors are expected to uphold and disseminate\nscientific culture and in case of transgression strict penal provisions should\nbe instituted against them.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
