It has also been seen as an undemocratic mean to gain public support. Populist measures like this shatters the hopes of a shift to market-driven policies and is not seen as a long term solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Populist schemes- an immediate\nrelief.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>These measures are important and act\nas immediate. It help the poor and needy by making resources accessible and\naffordable to them.<\/li><li>Competitive populism can also be a very effective way to\nidentify the long-felt community needs. Since these are area-specific,\npolitical parties and candidates will focus on local problems, thereby making\nelections more issue-oriented and participatory, and our democracy more vibrant\nand responsive.<\/li><li>They will remain the critical components of the social safety\nnet and poverty alleviation programmes of any government.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Populist measures- not a long term sustainable\nsolution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In an\nextremely diverse and heterogeneous society like ours, satisfying individual\ndesires with scarce public resources is impossible. Specific forms of\nindividual assistance will end up satisfying few, and even that only partially,\nwhile leaving the large majority dissatisfied. <\/li><li>Further, the\nscarce resources and huge demand does not benefit anybody, rather put extra\npressure on states.<\/li><li>Focus should\nbe on connecting roads, water supply, sewerage facilities, agriculture storage\nand marketing facilities, community halls and libraries, school and hospital\nbuildings, and check-dams and irrigation channels. This improves the\nproductivity and living standards of local residents, encouraging further\ninvestment, providing jobs and expanding economic and commercial opportunities.\n<\/li><li>Subsidy\nencourage inefficiency by relying more in the subsidy money that offered by the\ngovernments and do not address the real issues like increasing incomes of the\npoor.<\/li><li>These\nschemes put extra burden on state\u2019s purse and generally lead to fiscal deficit,\nthereby affecting growth prospects of state.<\/li><li>These\nschemes act as a tool of diversion from real issues, and suppress the real\nissues in the name of freebies.<\/li><li>These programmes are too complex to\nconceive and administer, and should be done so taking into account the varying\nneeds and problems of different areas and communities. Their designing cannot\nbe left to the caprices of the political marketplace.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim should not be to blindly eliminate populism, but to channel it towards achieving socially and economically desirable objectives.
