There are various areas of convergence that provide opportunities for both the nations to work together for a common goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Areas of convergence in\nIndia-US relations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Balancing the rise of revisionist China: <\/strong>US considers India to be a chief security\nprovider to counter the rise of China in the Indo-Pacific. Chinese adventurism in the South China Sea gave momentum to\nthe formation of the Quadrilateral grouping between India, USA, Japan and\nAustralia. Thus provide opportunity for twin nations to work together.<\/li>
  2. Terrorism:<\/strong> US policies are aligned with India\u2019s strong campaign\nagainst global terrorism. Designating Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as\nglobal terrorist by UNSC signifies a new level of diplomatic cooperation\nbetween India and the USA. Thus, counter-terrorism is a major area of\nconvergence.<\/li>
  3. Defence cooperation: <\/strong>Aggregate worth of defence acquisition from US\nhas crossed over $13 billion. Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI)\nfor co-production and co-development of weapon systems and platforms. New\ndefence agreements like Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement\n(COMCASA), Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), etc. Hence,\ncooperation with the US is in India\u2019s strategic interests. However, there are\ncertain contentious issues between India and the US, which forces India to look\nbeyond US. For example:<\/li>
  4. Energy Security: <\/strong>US sanctions on Iran which led India to stop oil imports\nfrom Iran threatening India\u2018s energy security and economic stability. Rising\nenergy demand in India can only be fulfilled if it is conveyed to USA about the\nsame so that both nations work together without jeopardising India\u2019s interests.<\/li>
  5. Bilateral trade: <\/strong>Bilateral trade between both the countries is increased. It\nwas fostered by closer ties between the Indian and American industries\nespecially in the Information and communications technology (ICT), engineering\nand medical sectors. It is important for both the nations to work together. USA\ncan help India to rise and take place of China in the view of ongoing India-US\ntrade war.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Issues between India-US\nrelations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Trade:<\/strong> Recently India and US confronted each other regarding\ntariffs and protectionist policies. US has continuously accused India of high\ntariffs and India have accused USA of restriction to US markets and high\ntariffs on Indian products.<\/li>
    2. Intellectual Property Rights: <\/strong>US has continuously criticised India for its IPR\npolicies. It has accused India of acting against Intellectual properties of\nmajor companies especially pharmaceutical over generic drugs.<\/li>
    3. Continuous support to Pakistan: <\/strong>Although US has reduced support to Pakistan, it\nhas still provided monetary support to Pakistan. Major support by US is due to\nAfghanistan. In February 2016, the Obama administration notified the US\nCongress that it intended to provide Pakistan eight nuclear-capable F-16\nfighters and assorted military goods including eight despite strong\nreservations from US lawmakers regarding the transfer of any nuclear weapons\ncapable platforms to Pakistan.<\/li>
    4. Relations with Russia:<\/strong> US is all time rival of Russia. While India is\nall time friend of Russia. Russia has always supported India in international\nplatform. It helped India to develop its defence capabilities. In 2018, India\ninked the historic agreement worth with Russia to procure four S-400\nsurface-to-air missile defence system, the most powerful missile defence system\nin the world ignoring America’s CAATSA act. The U.S. threatened India with\nsanctions over India’s decision to buy the S-400 missile defence system from\nRussia.<\/li>
    5. Relations with Iran: <\/strong>US has put sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear\ndevelopment. India has strategic interest in Iran to buy oil. India has\ncontinuously bought oil from Iran despite of US sanctions on Iran. The United\nStates threatened India with sanctions over India’s decision to buy oil from\nIran. But recently it exempted India from sanctions that allowed India to buy\noil from Iran.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Way forward:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. India and\nUSA should work together to achieve growth and prosperity of both the nations.<\/li>
      2. Diplomatic\nefforts should be made frequently to resolve pending issues bilaterally.<\/li>
      3. It is\nimportant for both the nations to understand the aim and aspirations of each\nother.<\/li>
      4. People to\npeople contact must be increased in order to strengthen bilateral relations.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Recognising India as a key to its strategic interests, the United States has sought to strengthen its relationship with India. The two countries are the world’s largest democracies, and both are committed to political freedom protected by representative government. The US and India have a common interest in the free flow of commerce and resources, including through the vital sea lanes of the Indian Ocean.
