Climate change is a global phenomenon having no boundaries. It requires a nationwide effort especially efforts at local and state level. It is responsibilities of all sectors to contain climate change. But a more active role for climate change action is needed to be played by the cities and towns and thus must be an integral part to the planning of Indian cities and towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significance of <\/strong>climate change as an integral part to the planning\nof Indian cities and towns?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Cities and\ntowns need to play an active role on important environmental issued by\nfunctioning as policy innovators, testing successful policies been adopted\nacross the world.<\/li>
  2. Cities plays\nan important role in understanding of the local situation and\ncircumstances  and help in coordination\nwith all the stakeholders.<\/li>
  3. Local action\non climate change is needed to achieve the reductions targets on the ground.<\/li>
  4. They play an\nimportant role in policy formulation through local inputs and conveying\nregional differences. E.g Hill states needs and action differ and are more\nimportant than other states wrt climate change action.<\/li>
  5. States,\ncities and towns  are responsible for on\nthe ground implementation of national policies.<\/li>
  6. State\ngovernments\u2019 legislation along with national legislation are critical for wide\naction on the ground.<\/li>
  7. Role of\ncities is also important to check any environmental damaging act and policy of\ncentre. Also it put pressure on centre to act against climate change as they\nare voice of local community.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    How India should shape its economic policies in light of\nclimate change?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Economic\npolicies should focus on protecting the poor and vulnerable sections of society\nthrough an inclusive and sustainable development strategy, sensitive to climate\nchange.<\/li>
    2. It should\nfocus on achieving national growth through ecological sustainable way<\/li>
    3. Focus should\nbe on devising efficient and cost-effective strategies for Demand Side\nManagement in a sustainable way.<\/li>
    4. Digitisation\nshould be increased so as to reduce burden on environment for paper.<\/li>
    5. Efforts to\ndeploy appropriate technologies for both adaptation and mitigation of\ngreenhouse gases emissions through policies is needed.<\/li>
    6. It should\nalso focus on new and innovative forms of market, regulatory and voluntary\nmechanisms to promote sustainable development.<\/li>
    7. The\nimplementation of programmes by including civil society and local government\ninstitutions and through public- private partnership should be priority.<\/li>
    8. Also efforts\nshould be made to achieve international cooperation for research, development,\nsharing and transfer of technologies .<\/li>
    9. Green\nenergies and green projects should be promoted.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Climate change is real and demand effective state role and economic policies. Coordination at all level is required. Also sustainable development should be focus of both cities and states.
