The recent India-Pakistan crisis, while raising the spectre of war in South Asia, also highlighted that the likes of France, Germany, Australia, and the United States are willing to stand behind India in the international arena. Three emerging shifts in the international order have played a key role in catalysing India\u2019s rising stature in the international order: terrorism, climate change, and the rise of China. In the last four years, India has sought to play a greater role in solving global challenges and shaping the rules, norms, and processes that guide these efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent shift in foreign policy of India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Centrality of economic development: <\/strong>India,\nbuoyed by its growing economic engagement with the rest of the world, captured\nthis opportunity to grow and develop and also target Pakistan at a time when\nIslamabad was unable, and at times unwilling, to rein in terror organizations\noperating on its soil. This involves an implicit benchmarking of the\ntechnological capabilities of the Indian economy with respect to the global\nbest practices and\/or global technology frontier.<\/li>
  2. Integrations of domestic and foreign policy: <\/strong>Another\nimportant change is much greater alignment of foreign policy with domestic\nobjectives. Both the domestic programs \u201cSwachh Bharat\u201d, Digital India\/Smart\nCities was mentioned in public statements at various international platform. Further\nYoga is now being celebrated as an international day by U.N.<\/li>
  3. Emphasis on national power: <\/strong>A greater\nemphasis is being laid on overall national power, with a more realistic\nassessment of the appropriate role of military power. One of the implications\nof this policy is the increased focus on unconventional threats. Another\nimplication is a much greater focus on national capability to produce a broad\nrange of defence equipment in India.<\/li>
  4. Greater emphasis on global socio-politics and\nsoft power: <\/strong>Another change is a greater emphasis on global socio-politics\nand \u201csoft power\u201d, the third dimension of national power. This includes the\nexpansion of common ground based on religious and cultural heritage &\nhistory of India, as well as the Indian diaspora across the World.<\/li>
  5. Confident pragmatism: <\/strong>This involves\nfreeing up of self-imposed, historical and mental, constraints on developing\nthe full potential of economic or security relations with any country. Thus\nIndia\u2019s economic relationships with potential adversaries pursued relatively\nindependently from the security relationship, without one constraining the\nother or being completely parallel. This is most clearly apparent from India\u2019s economic\nagreements reached with China and the formation of the BRICs Bank and Asian\nInfrastructure Bank.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
