Since its independence, India has sought to maintain strong ties with Saudi Arabia, an important regional power and trading base in West Asia. Relations between the two countries are rooted in strong historical and civilisational links. Saudi Arabia is also home to more than 1.4 million Indian workers. The mutually beneficial partnership encompasses active cooperation in a wide spectrum of spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Saudi Arabia significant to\nIndia?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Indian Diaspora:<\/strong> The 2.7 million strong\nIndian community is the largest expatriate group in Saudi Arabia. They send\nremittances of over US $11 billion annually to India.<\/li>
  2. Counter-terrorism: <\/strong>India needs Saudi\nArabia to support India\u2019s efforts against terrorism and against Pakistan. Saudi\nArabia is an influential nation in Middle East and Muslim World. Riyadh has\nlargely shown an understanding of India\u2019s terrorism-related concerns, and has\nagreed to work with India in countering the global menace.<\/li>
  3. Strategic significance: <\/strong>Saudi is\ngeographically located near Strait of Hormuz. This is world\u2019s most important\noil artery and strategically important for India\u2019s energy security.<\/li>
  4. Investment: <\/strong>Saudi has one of the largest\nSovereign Fund in the World. It is an important nation to invest fund in India\nparticularly in National Infrastructure and Investment fund (NIIF). India needs\nfund for its infrastructure sector.<\/li>
  5. Against Pakistan: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia has a\nsubstantial influence over Pakistan. India can use this influence to bring\nPakistan to negotiating table for talks on terrorism and bilateral relations.<\/li>
  6. Energy: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia is a source of 17%\nor more of crude oil and 32% of LPG requirements of India and thus a key pillar\nof India\u2019s energy security. With US sanctions on Iran, India needs to import\ncrude oil from other sources to meet its energy need. Saudi Arabia have offered\nIndia with additional crude oil supplies to meet India\u2019s growing needs.<\/li>
  7. Cultural:<\/strong> The Saudi Kingdom facilitates\nHajj pilgrimage to over 1,75,000 Indians every year. This is one of the other\nreasons why Saudi Arabia is an important country for India.<\/li>
  8. Exports:<\/strong> Other areas of interest for\njoint collaboration are fertilisers, food security, infrastructure, renewable\nenergy, etc. ICT, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, electronic and manufacturing\nfacilities, and housing are other potential areas of enhanced cooperation.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. The Riyadh Declaration of 2010 had forged a\nStrategic Partnership between India and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has\nidentified India as one of the 8 strategic partners.<\/li>
    2. It intends to deepen partnership in areas of\npolitical engagement, security, trade and investment, and culture. As part of\nthis engagement, the two sides are finalising the setting up of a Strategic\nPartnership Council at the Ministerial level.<\/li>
    3. With India\u2019s growing economic, political and\nstrategic interests, it cannot stay aloof for long with current geopolitical\nenvironment in Middle East, whether it is war in Yemen to strained ties of UAE\nand others with Qatar and Iran. India will have to engage more vigorously with\ndevelopments in the region.<\/li>
    4. Any kind of extended crisis in region will not\njust affect India\u2019s energy security but also create insecurity among large\nIndian Diasporas. This has to be a priority for India\u2019s foreign policy makers.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Indian Diaspora has been an important driver of Saudi\u2019s economy, from labour force to investments. India should use them as soft power for furthering Indian interests. India Saudi relationships are indeed going through golden phase but the former needs to maintain an incremental approach in furthering the interest of both.
