Further, US desire to reduce military footprint in Afghanistan will create increasing pressure on regional powers to step up their game. India will be no exception. So, India\u2019s Afghanistan policy should rapidly adapt to the evolving realities and play a role that suits India\u2019s stature in the context of the wider South Asian region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Impact of destabilisation and tensions in Afghanistan on\nIndia\u2019s strategic interests:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Increased\nPakistan leverage:<\/strong> The reason\nfor Taliban\u2019s resilience is the support it receives from Rawalpindi. Pakistan\u2019s\nleverage in Afghanistan is set to grow. India\u2019s Afghanistan policy has a major\nobjective to curtail Islamabad\u2019s influence in Kabul and deny Pakistan\u2019s state\nand non-state agents leverage to plot against Indian interests.<\/li><li><strong>Unstable\nKashmir:<\/strong> The destabilisation in Afghanistan will\naffect the Kashmir Valley as terrorist outfits may feel empowered and would\nincrease their presence in Kashmir.<\/li><li><strong>Geopolitics: <\/strong>Afghanistan is tied to India\u2019s vision of being a regional\nleader and a great power, coupled with its competition with China over\nresources and its need to counter Pakistani influence. China is already making\ninroads into Afghanistan with her BRI project. The process will be further\neasier. <\/li><li><strong>Economic\nInterests:<\/strong> India\u2019s Afghanistan policy\u2019s another\nobjective is to gain access to vast energy markets in Central Asia, is also at\nstake. India has presence in Afghanistan after the construction of the Chabahar\nPort in Iran and the highway that links it to Kabul. Indian infrastructure\nprojects of Salma dam, Parliament building, infrastructure projects will be at\nstake. <\/li><li><strong>India\u2019s\nimage:<\/strong> India\u2019s ability to mentor a nascent\ndemocracy will go a long way to demonstrate to the world that India is indeed a\nmajor power, especially a responsible one. Any destabilisation would impact\nsuch efforts.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How India should secure its interests in Afghanistan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>India must\nfocus on assisting Afghanistan in every manner possible to ensure that the\ncountry\u2019s sorts are as peaceful and participative as possible. <\/li><li>On the\nmilitary front as well, India must move quickly to provide helicopters as well\nas engineering\/tech support for Afghan hardware. <\/li><li>Inactive SAARC must now be revived to\nstrengthen the regional co-operation in South Asia.<\/li><li>For regional\nsecurity there must be closer involvement of regional powers in international\nefforts to ensure non-interference and a stable Afghanistan. This also requires\ninvolvement of the Central Asian Republics, which border Afghanistan. It is\nimportant for India to coordinate its efforts with those of Russia and Iran to\nensure success.<\/li><li>India must\nseek to build capacities and capabilities of Afghan nationals and its\ninstitutions for governance and delivery of public service, develop\nsocio-economic infrastructure, secure lives and promote livelihood.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Afghanistan is important for India\u2019s strategic and economic interests. Further India has a lot at stake in Afghanistan. Continuing the efforts of implementing mega infrastructure projects, providing military equipments and training to Afghan personnel on the sidelines is important.
