The term \u2018Indo-Pacific\u2019 has gained currency as a new construct in recent times. The Indo-Pacific provides a geographic and strategic expanse, with the two oceans being linked together by the ten ASEAN countries. Security in the region is must through dialogue to ensure a common rules-based order, freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce in accordance with international law. India supports a rules-based, balanced, and stable trade environment in the Indo- Pacific region. Sustainable connectivity initiatives promoting mutual benefit should be continually fostered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic\nsignificance of Indo-Pacific region for India<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Strategic significance: <\/strong>Indio-Pacific is a multipolar\nregion, contributing more than half of the world\u2019s GDP and population. A\nstable, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific Region is an important pillar of\nIndia\u2019s strategic partnership with the other countries especially USA.<\/li>
  2. Mineral Resources:<\/strong> Maritime territories have also\nemerged as depositories of vital resources ranging from fish stocks to minerals\nand offshore oil and gas.48 The South China Sea, for instance, is estimated to\nhold some 10 per cent of the global catch of fish as well as 11 billion barrels\nof oil and 190 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas.<\/li>
  3. Economic Growth:<\/strong> According to a report of the Asian\nDevelopment Bank (ADB), countries in the Indo-Pacific produce over 60% of\nglobal GDP, making the region the largest single contributor to global growth.<\/li>
  4. Commerce:<\/strong> The region consists of many of the\nworld\u2019s vital choke points for global commerce, including the Straits of Malacca\nwhich is very critical for the growth of world economy.  The Indo-Pacific region also stands at the\nintersection of international trade, with around 32.2 million barrels of crude\noil pass through annually and 40% of global exports come from the region.<\/li>
  5. Maritime Trade:<\/strong> Pacific islands are strategically\nsignificant from New Delhi\u2019s point of view as they sit astride important sea\nlines of communication through which important maritime trade is conducted.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Chinese threat and increasing\npresence: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. The Chinese regime claims that it has historical\nownership over nearly the entire region, which gives it the right to\nmanufacture islands, declare defensive perimeters around its artificial\nislands, and to chase ships from other nations out of the South China Sea. The\nInternational Court of Arbitration rejected the claim in 2016.<\/li>
    2. China considers disputes in the South China Sea\nas territorial disputes and therefore considers that UNCLOS does not have a\nlocus standi to pass the judgement over disputes.<\/li>
    3. China\u2019s\nincreasingly active presence in the Indian Ocean region as well as its efforts\nto expand geopolitical reach in Asia and beyond by the use of trade and\nmilitary Demand rule based order to secure India\u2019s interests and free trade. In\nthe present time, the control of sea lanes and ports would be the game.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      How India\nshould tackle Chinese dominance in Indo-Pacific region?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. It is important to adhere to freedom\nof navigation, adherence to rules-based order and stable trade environment.\nAlso for free sea and air lanes, connectivity and upholding international rules\nand norms.<\/li>
      2. India should focus on the link between\nIndo-China border area and the East China Sea. It is important for India to cooperate\nwith Japan and the US to deal with Chinese front. Japan and the US are willing\nto support India\u2019s efforts to modernize its defence in the Indo-China border\narea.<\/li>
      3. Japan, the US and Australia should share the\nknow-how related with anti-submarine capabilities and enhance India\u2019s military\npreparedness. <\/li>
      4. Furthermore, developing infrastructure in other countries\nof the region is useful, too. E.g. Bangladesh has already chosen Japan\u2019s\nMartabali port project instead of China\u2019s Sonadia port project. If the\nTrincomalee port project involving Japanese assistance in Sri Lanka succeeds,\nthen the importance of China\u2019s Hambantota port will decline. The Asia-Africa\nGrowth Corridor (AAGC), a result of Indo-Japanese cooperation, will also\ncounter China\u2019s growing influence in Africa.<\/li>
      5. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are\nstrategically important. These islands are near the Malacca Straits, providing\nan excellent location for tracking China\u2019s submarine activities. India need to modernise\nthe infrastructure to deploy more and larger warships and planes in the Andaman\nand Nicobar Islands.<\/li>
      6. India needs to have maritime alliances like Quad\n(India, Australia, the US and Japan) with different countries including US to\nprotect its interests in the South China Sea without provoking China.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        The Indo-Pacific region is highly heterogeneous in terms of economic size and level of development, with significant differences in security establishments and resources. India has been an active participant in mechanisms like the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), the East Asia Summit, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers Meeting Plus. All  these  engagements  portray  India\u2019s  increasing  involvement  in  the Indo-Pacific. Maintaining the delicate balance between the interests of all stakeholders will be a key challenge. Thus, India needs to carefully design its Indo-Pacific policy while keeping its long-term strategic and economic interests in mind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
