Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of\nhuman intelligence in machines. These are programmed to think like humans and\nmimic their actions. Artificial intelligence has a lot of potential\napplications especially in the healthcare sector. It can be used in diagnosis,\ntreatment design, imaging diagnosis, early detections of disease outbreaks,\nrobot assisted surgeries, virtual nurse assistants etc.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potential application\nof artificial intelligence in the healthcare system:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Save lives: <\/strong>A lot of\norganisations and medical care centres are relying on AI to save lives. An\norganization called Cambio HealthCare developed a clinical decision support\nsystem for stroke prevention that can give the physician a warning when there\u2019s\na patient at risk of having a heat stroke.<\/li>
  2. Managing medical records and other Data: <\/strong>The first step in health care is compiling and analysing\ninformation (like medical records and other past history), data management is\nthe most widely used application of artificial intelligence and digital\nautomation. Robots collect, store, format, and trace data to provide faster,\nmore consistent access.<\/li>
  3. Treatment plan:<\/strong>\nArtificial intelligence systems analyse data and reports from a patient\u2019s file,\nexternal research and clinical expertise to help select the correct,\nindividually customized treatment plan.<\/li>
  4. Virtual nurses: <\/strong>The AI\nhas been used to develop a digital nurse to help people monitor patient\u2019s\ncondition and follow up with treatments, between doctor visits. In 2016, Boston\nChildren\u2019s Hospital developed an app Alexa that gives basic health information\nand advice for parents of ill children. <\/li>
  5. Medication monitoring: <\/strong>AI\nhelps monitor medication courses of patients. It is very important to ensure proper dose regime to be\nfollowed by the patient. For instance, the AiCure app monitors the use of medication by a patient.<\/li>
  6. Drug development: <\/strong>Developing\npharmaceuticals through clinical trials can take more than a decade. AI can\nmake this process faster and cheaper. Amidst the recent Ebola virus scare, a\nprogram powered by AI was used to scan existing medicines that could be\nredesigned to fight the disease.<\/li>
  7. Precision medicine: <\/strong>Genetics\nand genomics look for mutations and links to disease from the information in\nDNA. With the help of AI, body scans can spot cancer and vascular diseases\nearly and predict the health issues people might face based on their genetics.<\/li>
  8. Health Monitoring: <\/strong>Wearable\nhealth trackers like those from FitBit, Apple and others monitors heart rate\nand activity levels. They can send alerts to the user to get more exercise and\ncan share this information to doctors (and AI systems) for additional data\npoints on the needs and habits of patients.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Government efforts\nregarding artificial intelligence in India:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n National Programme on Artificial\n Intelligence<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n It was announced in the Interim Budget 2019. The programme\n would be catalysed by the establishment of the National Centre on Artificial\n Intelligence as a hub along with 6 centres of excellence.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n National strategy for AI<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n NITI Aayog came up with a National Strategy for Artificial\n Intelligence in India focusing on economic growth and social inclusion. It\n provides over 30 policy recommendations to invest in scientific research,\n encourages reskilling and training, accelerates the adoption of AI across the\n value chains, and promotes ethics, privacy, and security in AI.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n Task Force on Artificial Intelligence<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n AI Task Force was formed by the Commerce and Industry\n Department, Government of India that focuses on India\u2019s economic transformation.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n International Center for Transformative\n Artificial Intelligence<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n NITI Aayog and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research\n (TIFR) initiated collaboration to set up International Center for\n Transformative Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI) to conduct advanced\n research to incubate AI-led solutions in three important areas\u2013 healthcare,\n agriculture and smart mobility.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n AI 4 All Global Hackathon<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n NITI Aayog launched AI 4 All Global\n Hackathon to promote awareness and develop solutions to address the\n infrastructure challenges, without compromising on the data privacy while\n training the AI algorithms.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n National Mission on Interdisciplinary\n Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS)<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n It is a programme led by the Union Ministry of Science\n & Technology to enhance capabilities of cyber-physical systems. Budget\n 2019 allotted Rs. 5 crore for the mission.\n <\/td><\/tr>
    \n AI Ecosystem<\/strong>\n <\/td>\n In order to create a policy framework and to develop the\n ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence, the Ministry of Electronics &\n Information Technology, has constituted 4 committees covering all the aspects\n of AI. These Committees are:\n Committee\n on platforms and data for AI.Committee\n on leveraging AI for identifying National Missions in key sectors.Committee\n on mapping technological capabilities, key policy enablers, skilling,\n re-skilling and R&D.Committee\n on cybersecurity, safety, legal and ethical issues.\n \n \n \n <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Artificial intelligence has a lot of potential for India.\nNearly 200 Artificial Intelligence start-ups in India are today innovating and\ncreating AI-based solutions for various industries. It can complement Digital\nIndia Mission by helping in the big data analysis which is not possible without\nusing AI. \u2018Make in India\u2019 programme can be strengthened and help India in\nbecoming a major manufacturing hub with AI-assisted technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
