Traditional medicine is considered as a\nmajor healthcare provider around the globe particularly in rural and remote\nareas. Indian traditional medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani\nhave a very rich history of their effectiveness. Mainstreaming of such medicine\nis important for the people. Evidence based incorporation of Indian traditional\nmedicine in clinical practice will help to provide quality healthcare to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\nwill strengthening of traditional medicine will help in the achievement of\nsustainable and more affordable healthcare system? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Accessibility: <\/strong>Despite tremendous\nadvances the healthcare system lag behind in accessibility, availability and\naffordability in many parts of India. Integration of Ayurvedic and other Indian\ntraditional medicine will be helpful in promoting the health of the people who\nare unable to access modern medicine.<\/li>
  2. Affordability: <\/strong>Variety, flexibility,\neasy availability, religious\/social acceptance, relative low side effect and\ncost are the key factors for the need for revival of traditional medicine. The\nrevival also provides us the opportunity to integrate such medicine in primary\nhealthcare to facilitate the people’s health.<\/li>
  3. Doctor\u2019s availability: <\/strong>At present, an\nacute shortage of allopathic doctors exists in India. In India, the ratio of\nthe doctor-patient is 1:1700. The ratio will come to 1:800 if the AYUSH\npractitioners are added. Thus, AYUSH practitioners can help in plugging gaps\ndue to shortage of doctors. <\/li>
  4. Prevent common diseases:<\/strong> Strengthening\ntraditional medicine will help in prevention of common diseases due to their\nless side effects and long term benefits. A study in rural areas of West Bengal\nshows that folk medicine plays a key role to prevent common diseases like small\ninjuries, skin disease, fever, dehydration, diabetes, high BP, liver disease\netc. in a better way.<\/li>
