{"id":100405,"date":"2021-04-08T16:21:05","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T10:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=100405"},"modified":"2021-04-08T22:12:45","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T16:42:45","slug":"national-super-computing-missionnsm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-super-computing-missionnsm\/","title":{"rendered":"National Super Computing Mission(NSM)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What is the News?\u00a0<\/strong>India is fast emerging as a leader in high-power computing with the launch of the National Super Computing Mission(NSM).<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About National Super Computing Mission(NSM):<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, the government launched t<strong>he National Super Computing Mission<\/strong>\u00a0in 2015.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, the <strong>aim is to connect research and academic institutions to a Supercomputing grid<\/strong> all over the country. The grid consists of\u00a0more than 70 high-performance computing facilities, It will increase the research capacities and capabilities in the country.<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, these supercomputers will also be networked on the National Supercomputing grid over the National Knowledge Network (NKN). The NKN is another program of the government. NKN connects academic institutions and R&amp;D labs over a high-speed network.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implementing Agency: <\/strong>Department of Science and Technology and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) through the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Phases under the mission:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Phase 1: <\/strong>Under this phase, 30% of the value addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-are-supercomputers-discuss-the-salient-features-and-importance-of-national-supercomputing-mission\/\">Supercomputers<\/a> is done in India.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Param Shivay was the first supercomputer assembled indigenously, installed in IIT(BHU).<\/li>\n<li>Param Shakti and Param Brahma supercomputer installed at IIT-Kharagpur and IISER, Pune respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Thereafter, supercomputing facilities were set up in two more institutions and one more is being set up with a computing speed to 6.6 Petaflops (PF).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Phase II: <\/strong>Under this phase, 40% of the value addition of Supercomputers is done in India.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8 institutions are being equipped with supercomputing facilities by April 2021 with a total of 10 PF compute capacity.<\/li>\n<li>MoUs have also been signed with a total of 14 premier institutions of India for establishing Supercomputing Infrastructure with Assembly and Manufacturing in India.<\/li>\n<li>This phase will complete by September 2021. After completion, it will take the country\u2019s computing power to 16 Petaflops(PF).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Phase III:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This phase will take the computing speed to around 45 Petaflops. This will include three systems of 3 PF each and one system of 20PF as a national facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Indigenous Development: <\/strong>India has developed an <strong>Indigenous server named Rudra <\/strong>which can meet the High-Performance Computing (HPC) requirements of all governments and PSUs.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>About National Knowledge Network(NKN):<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Knowledge Network(NKN) <\/strong>was established in 2010. Its objective is to interconnect all institutions of higher learning and research with a high-speed data communication network.
