Of the 49 sites, 10 are in UP, 6 in Punjab, 4 each in Gujarat and Jammu, and Kashmir among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Located in<\/b><\/strong>: Gujarat.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Type<\/b><\/strong>: Freshwater wetland located near the coast of the Gulf of Kutch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Flora and Fauna<\/b><\/strong>: The site provides habitat to endangered Pallas\u2019s fish-eagle, Indian skimmer, and the vulnerable common pochard. \u00a0The site also regularly supports more than 1% of the south and south-west Asian population of Dalmatian pelicans, more than 2% of greylag goose, and more than 20% of the common crane.<\/p>\n<p>The sanctuary is now part of Marine National Park, Jamnagar (the<strong><b>\u00a0first marine national park <\/b><\/strong>in the country) and also part of the Central Asian Flyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Note<\/b><\/strong>: Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary has become the fourth wetland of Gujarat to get the Ramsar tag. It also provides a wintering ground for over 25 species that migrate on the Central Asian Flyway. The sanctuary also supports 45 species of fish such as vulnerable European carp and the catfish Wallago Attu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance of Ramsar Listing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ramsar secretariat designating a wetland as a wetland of global importance may not lead to any extra funding by the global body. But a Ramsar tag makes it incumbent upon the authority to strengthen the protection regime.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Haiderpur Wetland<\/h3>\n<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Haiderpur Wetland of Western Uttar Pradesh has been recognized as the 47th Ramsar site in the country and 9th in Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Haiderpur Wetland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Haiderpur Wetland is a human-made wetland situated on the Muzaffarnagar-Bijnor border in Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p>It was formed in 1984 by the construction of <strong><b>Madhya Ganga Barrage<\/b><\/strong> at the confluence of the Solani and Ganga rivers. It is listed in the world\u2019s 25 most endangered primates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason behind opposition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the Kakoijana Reserve Forest is converted into a wildlife sanctuary, stricter rules will be applied and this will impact the customary and traditional practices and consequently result in villagers losing their rights over the forest.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the villagers have demanded that the reserve forest should be converted into a community forest reserve using Forest Rights Act, 2006.
